Immunotherapy inflammation on tumour

Hi everyone mom is currently having immunotherapy; had scan 3 months ago and told the cancer was asleep. She has nsclc stage 3b lung cancer. This scan the consultant has phoned and said she has got inflammation, I think they are saying that it is bigger. Did anyone else have inflammation during immunotherapy and can that be a side effect of the treatment? If tumour is appearing bigger and due to inflammation it isn’t something normally to worry about is it? I don’t want her cancer to return. Any support appreciated x

I’m not sure what that means - it might be worth ringing the nurse to find out if the inflammation is on the tumour or something else? Good luck x

Patients have different responses to immunotherapy as it depends on their own immune response and yes, inflammation happens and can appear to increase the size of the tumour but can also reduce later. Many of the side effects of immunotherapy which can vary in severity are also seen to be signals that the treatment is working as it's invoking an immune response - as you're already experiencing, her team is on the case and monitoring the response is an important part of her care.
