I had an operation to remove the upper lobe of my left lung last Wednesday. The surgery was done robotically. I’ve had no pain just a bit of soreness where the chest drain was removed on Saturday. There are two stitches there which are to be removed at my GP’s Surgery next Monday morning. My question - my left lower front, under my breast, feels and looks slightly swollen and the skin is a bit flushed compared with my right side. I assume this is a perfectly normal response to the surgery and will reduce over the next week or so. I can imagine my internal tissues are similarly swollen. Am I correct in thinking the above is to be expected and is perfectly normal?
Welcome to the forum and glad your operation went well.
It is normal to have a bit of swelling after the operation and will settle down.
The skin area that is flushed is not unusual, however we would advise that you contact your GP or even the district nurse for them to have a look, if nothing else for them to see your skin as a baseline and to reassure yourself.
Signs of infection would be swelling, redness, tenderness, pain, sometimes discharge at the wound or a high temperature.
We have an information booklet on lung surgery, which you may have already but in case not, this can be found on this link:
