Comparing other countries treatment.

Hi everyone, my mum has been recently diagnosed with Stage 4 NON SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER ADENOCARSINOMA confined to both lungs with one enlarged lymph node on the chest.

She’s 61 and was never a smoker.

Just wondering anyone with the similar diagnosis out here is able to help us.

We would like to know what treatment they’ve been given around the world such as Asia, Europe and America to treat it.

We have been tested negative for all the mutations so targeted therapy is out of the question.

We are based in the United Kingdom.

Thanks in advance xx

Work addict 58, My wife has SCLC, different to your mom but we also have a relative in Florida, USA. They were diagnosed with Non Small Cell 14 months ago and so far after radiotherapy and chemo they are getting on okay apart from shock. The bill for this so far is just under $500000.00. Luckily insurance covers it but dont compare other countries to us. We have the best Health System in the world!

Dear Workaddict58

Sorry to hear about your Mum and that she is not able to have the targeted therapies that you possibly hoped for.

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) provide up to date research and clinical guidelines for the care and treatment of all cancers, from 150 countries including the UK and expand Globally.

Their mission is 'to secure the best possible outcomes for people with cancer across Europe and around the world.'

The treatment they recommend is the same as the UK in the targeted therapies and immunotherapies based on the cell mutations, the only difference may be the availability / licence of certain drugs.

This is their link if you are interested in looking at this:

esmo.org/Guidelines/Lung-an...

Would your Mum consider asking about a clinical trial, this link details the open trials from Cancer Research UK:

cancerresearchuk.org/about-...

For each trial, you can look at the eligibility and location of the Hospital that is involved in the trial.

This other link on clinical trials, (previously named clinical trial gateway UK), now comes under (NIHR) National Institute for Health Research, Be Part of Research:

bepartofresearch.nihr.ac.uk... small cell lung cancer&location

You could also ask the lung cancer specialist nurse or Specialist, if there are any clinical trials locally.

If you wish to discuss anything you can call us on our Freephone nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200.

All the very best

Hi

At the age of 61 I too was diagnosed with Stage 4 NSCLC Female Never smoked in March 2017 I had 3 rounds of chemo Then onto Pemexetred maintenance This kept everything stable for for over 10 months I then went on a trial drug as part of SPM2 which worked well for 4 months Then a second drug which just made feel poorly and upset my digestive tract I have recently begun immunotherapy which I believe is now open to all not dependent on PDL1

I was at a meeting a few weeks ago and 2 people there (both men) have been on it two years and are vitually disease free I mention they are men as I wondered if sometimes males and females respo d differently to drugs One of them was a smoker I have to say the care given by NHS to be amazing The weak link k being my GP Do lots of reading Look into trials Ask questions Its a horrible position to be in I kept waiting for someone to realise they had muddled up my results!!

I saw a program about a vaccine offered in Cuba and hoped to get on a trial for that but wasn't able to Always new things to ask about and try Good luck
