Just been told my dad has lung cancer squamous cell carcinoma T4N2M0

Want another opinion his starting chemo next week. Been told it's not able to be removed. So confused going to see if the royal marsden will see him for a second opinion. Any one give advice.

Hi Wright60 firstly really sorry to hear about your dads news, there is no way to dress it up it is always going to be a shock to him and you his family. However as reading many of the posts on this site will show you there is hope and lots of it and some encouraging stories. I was diagnosed last February with the same thing squamous cell carcinoma in my right lung, but a little smaller and at stage two. However it was my second diagnosis having had two years earlier a tumor of the same type removed from my neck. When they said this was inoperable I was really shocked, I also had it in lymph nodes and in areas that couldn't have radiotherapy as they were too far apart, my lung and the middle of my chest. My only option was lots of chemo. However I reacted really well to the treatment and started to see progress almost straight away, so much so that I had improved enough by September to start radical radiotherapy. After that finished I had to wait three months to gauge progress and had my follow up in February. The scans show that my cancer is no longer active!! of course I will still be having to go in for regular checks every three months but they basically told me to get on with my life. My tips for improving your chances, change your diet, however good it is it can be better, avoid all sugar!!! Cancer feeds on glucose, using 15 times more than normal cells sugar helps cancer grow!! Sugar is slipped in to so much of your food, like bread and drinks, yogurt, avoid all processed food. get on line and research sugar and cancer and help yourself beat it. Get a second opinion if you think it will help you, however I put my faith in the people helping me, and loads more into helping myself!! Take lots of exercise if you can, don't know how old your Dad is, luckily for me I am only 53 and enjoy staying fit, but get him doing what he can the more the better. Good luck and stay positive it can help you far more than you realise you need your head on your side too!!

Hello all thanks so much for replying. You have really helped more than I can explain so much information to take in and read up on ect but its really great advice keep exercising gently. I will look into his diet thanks for telling me about the sugar tip. I'm shocked thats so bad. Dad is 64 its his left lung. Starts cemo weds so keeping everything crossed it works. His lost a lot of weight his appetite is tiny now as the tumour is near the stomarch part. He coughs a lot so be nice if the cemo helps reduce that for him. I'm grateful for any advice you can give. Scooter gives you great advice, I agree with all he says especially about diet,exercise and positive thinking. Check out some of the posts on this site and hopefully this will help you and your dad.

This is a lot of information to deal with. It is understandable that you want to be sure what the best treatment is for your dad. Scooter has given a good example of what non-surgical treatment can mean. The decision about whether surgery is appropriate will depend on many factors. You should be able to talk to your dad's lung Cancer Nurse Specialist about this.

Hi I called today left message thanks. Id like more information. I don't under stand enough ie what stage my dad is at I thought it was 4. I guess I need to ask his nurse. However info will be good. Worried about my mum never seen her so sad.

Have just written a post regarding my lung cancer. If you look at my reply to poptarts and also my post - hope it will give him some hope. I think if you type in veecatz it should come up with a bit of my story - suffice to say i am in remission and my tumour was T4N1M0 - there is hope!! good luck xx PS it was deemed inoperable and terminal and almost 12 months on I am still around - and well!
