Tylenol with codeine is a pretty low level of pain management for a cancer patient. You should talk with his doctor about his pain and see what else can be done. I had a pain patch (fentynl) of a pretty high dose for the first year after my diagnosis to help manage the pain from where I had pleurodesis and a pleurex catheter to drain the fluid. He should not have to be in such pain. Your doctor may also want to use some kind of anti-anxiety medication that can help with management of pain by interrupting that terrifying cycle when it hurts so much.
Jennifer has given you some really great advice. My own experience was similar to hers. As I got further from treatment the less I needed the fentanyl and was able to reduce the strength gradually.
He needs to be able to rest in order to heal and pain will certainly interfere with that.
Definitely get a referral to a palliative service. They are excellent at managing pain. They work with all of your doctors. Changed my life!
