At my Dads last visit the doctor found a blood clot in his lung. He's on lovenox. The doctor told us that blood clots happen in people who have cancer and are on chemo. They didn't go over any behavioral things he could do to make sure it doesn't happen again. Is this something y'all have seen happen?
Thank you

Sometimes cancers produce a protein that causes clots. My mom had them with her lung adenocarcinoma and she never had chemo. I’ve friends who have been on lovenox for a couple years.
I had 4 blood clots 2 years after lung cancer surgery. Two in right lung and 2 in left leg. At the same time. They told me it was not uncommon for cancer patients to get blood clots. I found it hard to believe as it had been so long after treatment. Still don't understand it.
I had blood clots about 3 1/2 years after diagnosis. It is important to be active as possible, wear compression socks especially during periods of inactivity.
I've had two blood clots in my lung at different times. I was on Eliquis the second time and was changed to Lovenox. I had radiation to that lung and feel that the damage in my lung caused the blood clots.
I've had nsclc for 14 months now and had been on lovenox twice a day because the medical team said the cancer causes blood clots. Previous to the cancer diagnosis I was on warfarin because of TIAs, (mini strokes). Also have factor 5 Leiden, a genetic blood clotting problem. This is present in about 3 % of the white population of Northern European ancestry. Didn't have any TIAs or other problems on the lovenox but I told the oncologist I was sick of sticking myself twice a day and couldn't I try another drug like eliquis? He said yes and I have been on eliquis 5 mg twice a day for 2 weeks now. The first week was 10 mg twice a day. Haven't had any problems on the eliquis. I am 100 % covered for the expense of the drugs so that is not an issue for me. I think they are both expensive.
Forgot to mention I was on full chemo every 3 weeks for 6 cycles and then maintenance chemo every 3 to 4 weeks since. Doing well with the treatment and anticipate being on maintenance chemo for the foreseeable future.
I had a PE blood clot they found on my first chest CT. I had no pain good morning and was told he's a very common with lung cancer. I was originally on Lovenox twice-daily injections but now I'm on Xarelto which is much easier. oncologist told me I'll have to stay on blood thinners forever because of my lung cancer diagnosis.
Last year in July my dad was hospitalized for 1 week because they found a 5 inch blood clot extending from outside his heart and wrapped up into the shoulder a bit. He was also on chemo for NSCLC. While scary, he was put on twice a day Lovenox forever, which brought his swelling down, helped his breathing, reduced the blood clot size and the Lovenox worked pretty well for him. But I will say, if your dad ever has to have a procedure where they stop his Lovenox, make sure you know how long he will be OFF his Lovenox. If they say more than 48 hours, I would definitely question it and have an issue with that. They took my dad off Lovenox last year for 4 days to do a lumbar puncture. I fought with the hospital about this as he should have never been taken off it that long - ever. In turn, his blood clot in chest filled right back up causing severe edema and he developed a new blood clot in his arm while they left him off Lovenox. So any future procedures that require being off Lovenox for, make sure they don’t leave him off more than safely required to do the procedure. Otherwise Lovenox should work great for your dad.
