Hi All

I suffer with primary lymphodema having had it 30+ years now.

I wear compression garments currently 24/7 I have recently come across ginger oil claims to help reduce swelling. Has anyone tried it? It’s meabt to help stop adipose tissue settling which cases the limb to increase in size

I’ve ordered some but don’t want to raise my hopes

I’ve tried so many things !

Any advice would be great

All good blessings xx

Hi, I have primary as well. I've never tried ginger oil but have had success minimizing the swelling with chinese herbs. It takes a bit of time but its worth it. You just need to find a qualified chinese medicine doctor who can help you --it requires some time as you are fixing the problem, not just temporarily reducing swelling. It took 4 months the first time I did chinese herbs to start to see results, and recently I've been doing a second course since a bit of swelling returned and it only took a couple weeks to bring the swelling down. Before that I had a few years without any problems, no compression required....you can get your life back! You can google chinese medicine for lymphedema for more information.

Wow! That sounds amazing

I’ll look into it. I’ve always been quite nervous of trying alternative medicines.

My lymphatics in right leg are very fine/non existent. Do you know anything about yours?

My leg has been swollen over 30 years now too so I guess harder to treat.

Well, I had mine--in a mild form--for over 15 years before I knew what it was. I believe it didn't advance much because I've always stayed active and eat primarily plant-based, which seems to help. But when it did start advancing a few years ago, and I finally got a diagnosis, it was beyond scary. Elevation no longer worked and if I went in for the back to back days of lymphatic drainage massage, it came right back within a few days. Then I tried everything I could find. The ONLY thing that worked other than temporarily was the chinese herbs (along with this tui na massage, but others are getting results with just the herbs so I think that is main solution). I've worked with two TCM doctors who both have treated about 10 people and all got results. It helped me get back to a normal life where you don't need compression. It just recently started swelling a bit so I went back on the herbs and after a couple weeks the swelling is already receding, plus it is still very minor compared to what it was before I treated it the first time. It is amazing, because everyone says there is no treatment to reverse it. I actually setup a website to share the info so more people learn about (and since I always continue to research everything anyway). Try it--there's no downside to trying.

Did you have the Chinese medicine treatment in the Uk?

Jeanne53 profile image
Jeanne53 in reply to Jbrooks18

No, only in the US and some in New Zealand (tui na). But I think anywhere you can get TCM, look for someone who has experience treating lymphedema or ongoing edema.

Thank you. I googled TCM but couldn't see any references to lymphoedema. Will keep looking though. Glad it's worked for you

So glad for you that you’ve had success and relief from this debilitating illness.

What is the website you set up please?

Jeanne53 profile image
Jeanne53 in reply to Cleobird

Here it is: fightlymphedema.com/. Yes I was incredibly happy to get the results, and wanted to share that something actually works. What is most exciting is since I've set this up I've been in touch with people who also have had results. It's non-invasive so there is no downside to trying, either. Best of luck!

Do you have any before and after pictures at all?

Jeanne53 profile image
Jeanne53 in reply to avh89

Sorry, I don't do pictures on the internet. I'm a business owner who posts alot professionally and just not comfortable with that. That said, any pictures would not be that dramatic as some of those, as mine never progressed too far even though it started a couple decades ago. I believe that's because I've been a plant-based healthy eater for awhile now, I believe that kept it from progressing, vegan diet doesn't appear to burden the lymphatic system. But I still got great results from the herbs. I remember seeing some videos of people with really bad lymphedema who also got the same relative results, but those were much more pronounced because they started from a higher level. Regardless, its a low risk, natural thing to try...and I'm hearing from more people who are having success with it. And still no one says that it has not worked for them. Can't hurt to try, especially before considering surgery or drugs that can have very bad consequences.

I have an appointment tomorrow, still very sceptical as I can't see how herbs can heal/alleviate a faulty lymphatic system! Worth a try though I suppose+

Jeanne53 profile image
Jeanne53 in reply to avh89

Its smart to be skeptical. I certainly was when I tried it. Fortunately I stuck with it and finally got results. But chinese medicine is amazing, and unfortunately western medicine does not know that much about the lymphatic system. I believe that what it does is help unblock and optimize the lymphatic system that you still have so your body is better able to function with less. And you need to support the process by eating well (vegan diet is what worked for me and others) and of course you HAVE to stay active everyday as your lymphatic system cannot function optimally without activity (fortunately walking is great and anyone can do that). I'm sure losing any extra weight is vital too. Here's a TCM doctor who has a video posted of a client he treated, too, sharing her experience. davidleeacupuncture.com/lym.... Best of luck with it!

avh89 profile image
avh89 in reply to Jeanne53

So far not really much luck. She only offered accupuncture and massage to 'fix it'. The massage was pretty rough and I'm very concerned that it's going to damage my lymphatic further as everywhere says it should be treated gently?!

Doesn't seem like something that's going to be of any benefit unfortunately!

Smells nice. Feels nice when gently applied. Has no effect on lymphatics.

The ginger oil to cure Lymphoedema is a web scam that many LE groups/charities including the Lymphoedema Support Network discredited in 2018. Those who ordered the expensive ginger oil and posted about it discovered it was hoax - either they never received the product and lost their money, or reported no charge in their Lymphoedema symptoms and therefore a waste of money. You can buy inexpensive ginger essential oil at the health shop if you want the oil for the pleasant fragrance etc

If you’re looking for a way to ease your LE symptoms try doing twice daily self lymph drainage, Lymphatic breathing and lymph drainage exercises. Wearing prescribed compression is important as it helps slow disease progression ie the cellular changes in the skin that is inevitable but can be slowed with diligent daily self-treatment. The LSN website has helpful links.

There are many anecdotal reports of high quality CBD oil (taken orally and topically) easing LE symptoms but there has been no formal research yet, it’s just starting.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I’ve honestly tried so many things and I’ll never give up searching. Let’s see if it even comes then! I massage daily trying to keep my skin in good condition. It’s a daily struggle as for the pain I think I’ve just learned to live with it!

I ordered it too! Also haven't tried it yet! I have both kinds also since. I had prostate cancer 10 years ago. Lets do it! Have you checked out the dietary recommendations? Restrictive but they work!

Miliverpool profile image
Miliverpool in reply to BarrelBellyBud

So sorry to hear you had cancer 😢 so you have secondary lymphodema then. What dietary recommendations? I’ve asked many times and and always been told nothing is proven with diet so I’d be glad of any advice.

Basically the lymphatic system helps to rid the body of poisons, and toxins and if it is clogged, blocked or destroyed through man's means (eg. Radiation) then it will collect in your body usually just below the skin. Pockets may at some point burst through the skin causing very painful lesions and leaking of lymph. The only dietary help is to not eat processed foods and anything that man has poisoned. Impossible to accomplish but simple to improve on..

HI miliverpool! i' m guessing that like me,you're from Liverpool!

I sometimes use ginger oil,but more often, other essential oils, such as lavender, when moisturising my legs..they don't improve things for me,but they smell good and I think are a nice occasional addition to any moisturing cream.

Someone helpful on here advised using castor oil and adding a few drops of essential lemon oil, then massaging into affected areas.

I find this feels very very nice and helps keeps my skin supple and soft.

I use organic castor oil from Holland and Barrett .

It's very thick, so i just warm a little, coz then it spreads more easily and goes further..then I add a few drops of lemon essential oil.

I am very interested in what Jeanne said about Chinese herbs and how effective they have been for her. In Liverpool there's a Chinese herbalist in Allerton Rd,very near Penny Lane. I went there some years ago looking for help with chronic fatigue syndrome..the herbs tasted and smelt awful and needed boiling up! ( gahhhh!!!) but who cares if they help...and they did help with my CFS symptoms..i cdnt afford to keep taking them, I think they were about £28 a bag,and that was 20 years ago. I think a bag lasted about a week,or possibly longer ,i cant remember now.

One effect they did have, people kept commenting how young i looked! So theyre obviously very good for the complexion.

Looking on Google, the Allerton clinic now charge £50 for a consultation(inc. free check up 7 days later) Additional Followups - £33..well out of my price range, but thought the info may be of interest to you and other members here.

I would deffo go for it if i could afford! XXX

Ps i hope this doesnt count as advertising - other clinics are available! :)
