Hi , I am the mother of a current 18 year old track athlete. My daughter was diagnosed with asthma after dance practice when she was @ 12. Never really had a problem like this past summer and year. Severe asthma attacks every single day, at times a severe then a small one afterwards. She is planning on going to Iowa to college to run. How does asthma and cold weather work? We are from South Texas, really concerned.

Hi Cdneg4kids,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story!

I am sorry to hear that your daughter has had severe asthma attacks! It's always so scary as a parent to see your child have any health issues...

Every one's asthma is different- with different triggers.

Suggestions to consider-

Premedicate per your doctor's orders

Warming-up before exercise and cooling down afterward

Staying hydrated

Minimizing exercise outside when asthma triggers are present such as cold air

Breathing through the nose or wearing a scarf, particularly during cold weather, to protect against cold air.

Hope this helps.

Take care,

Cara

Good advice - but instead of a scarf for breathing in cold weather check with a doctor on recommended cold weather masks. From basic to techy there are many out there. I searched google for cold weather mask. Here are 2; coldavenger.com/pages/prote...

and achooallergy.com/cold-weath...

But there are many more out there.
