I had a Lyme diagnosis two years ago and was treated with 21 days of doxy. Now I have been diagnosed with Fatty Liver disease and was wondering if there could be a connection here?

Thanks much for allowing me to join.

I would say it would contribute to the strain /overload on the liver, and there could be co infections from Lyme not completely iradicated by your antibiotic course, most Lyme specialists say longer courses of antibiotics are needed but they can be detrimental to health and people have died being treated on long courses of 4 months and longer, many Lyme sufferers get sicker from the "die off" caused by the antibiotics . It's a very difficult condition to treat and we should shortly see much revealed in terms of new findings worldwide regarding the fibro/autoimmune/ virus/parasite connection . The Walton Hospital here in Liverpool UK has been given large funds for research from the government. I sincerely hope we can get answers and solutions in our lifetime

Hello again Thyroiddown

I agree with you that more research needs to be done to find out if their is any connection to certain illnesses as to whether Lyme bacteria or any of the co-infections contribute to them developing. However, I am not of the opinion (due to lack of research) that all ME/CFS/Fibromyalgia etc are misdiagnosed Lyme Disease but feel it is possible that a percent may well be. It definitely needs more research in every area Lyme, Fibromyalgia, ME, Thyroid (as UK testing is also inadequate isn't it?) and find out once and for all about any connections or if certain bacteria causing brain inflammation.

How they continue to avoid funding this important research when we have cases of Lyme Disease rising from 3K a year to 8K but these figures this isn't even the tip of iceberg, it it potentially much, much higher. UK testing can give False Negatives despite everyone saying it's highly sensitive and others saying it is 57% accuracy. Why are they ignoring this silent epidemic? As John Caudwell said when he offered over 1M to be matched to start research quote 'I am only doing this because the government aren't doing it themselves'

Thank You again for your knowledgeable replies

Hello Thyroiddown

Thank You for kindly replying to this member with such helpful information :)

I wasn't aware about the research being done at Walton Hospital in Liverpool and I wondered if you could send a link to me via PM as I would be interested to read it. What exactly do they plan to research?

I look forward to your reply

All the best

Welcome to the LWLD Community ! :)

Unfortunately, I speak to many who have been bitten by a tick and had the prescribed treatment for the period advised who later still have ongoing symptoms or other issues. I think the government should do more research into Lyme Disease and look into changing the NICE guidelines and improve UK testing based on that research. We know the over use of antibiotics has caused bacteria to become resistant and I personally believe the Borrelia (Spirochete) bacteria that causes Lyme is doing the same to Doxycycline.

In fact, this USA research is pointing towards the need for research and better medications that quote 'we need targeted designer drugs to treat the Lyme spirochete'

Better drugs for Lyme disease: focus on the spirochete ( Stricker & Middelveen 2018)

Whether the two conditions are related I wouldn't like to say as I am unaware of the direct causes of Fatty Liver but certainly as Thyroiddown says the Lyme Bacteria and chronic infection does put strain on the liver, kidneys and the immune system. Without research we cannot connect the dots, but certainly I would say that if the bacteria is still present the symptoms of Fatty Liver may be worse due to the strain as mentioned above. I also noticed that 'die off' was mentioned in the comment above and I agree the toxins this produces also puts a massive strain on the body.

It might be worth you considering getting tested privately for Lyme and co-infections either in the UK or abroad, although the problem is that the NHS do not always accept the results and then you are left to try to fund private treatment or seek alternative therapies (Infrared Sauna, RIFE Machines, Vitamin C protocols etc) to try to help with symptom control by causing 'die off'. The latter is is a rocky road I must be honest as you can experience many Herx reactions and feeling more poorly before seeing any benefit. Here in the UK, we've certainly been let down and John Caudwell offered the government to match his offer of over 1M to start research - no response so far. I started a petition to try to get them to respond - change.org/p/matt-hancock-s...

I suggest that you supplement with Choline and Inositol which should help reduce your fatty liver. It worked for me after I recently started experiencing right flank pain/discomfort.

It is important to combine both because they work together making them much more effective than one alone. Simple Choline Bitartrate is all that is needed and not the more expensive forms of choline which help more with brain function. It is the liver help which is needed so the other forms such as Alpha GPC and similar forms do not offer anything more and they have additional problems such as absorbing humidity making them more difficult to use.
