The current dietary guidelines have basically unchanged since Ancel Keys persuaded the McGovern committee in 1977 that fat would kill you and carbohydrate wouldn't.

Well, we all know where that went - exponential rates of diabesity and obesity for starters, then Altzheimers, stroke, heart disease etc.

So, despite decades of evidence to the contrary, the stubborn intransigence of the powers be insisting their stance is evidence based, we are left wondering who is right. More often than not the message is, the message isn't being adhered to - ie eat less move more and if it doesn't work, it's YOUR FAULT.

Here's a screenshot from a talk by Amber O'Hearn at the KetoCon 2017. It clearly shows that the public HAVE got the message, (yet are still sick and unhappy).

You can see this for yourself in any supermarket. See what's in the basket of anyone overweight or obese (applies to normal weight people as well) Almost invariably you will see ghastly green or pink topped milk together with any amount of low-fat spread, yoghurt, etc. Then there's the new kid on the block, Arla yellow top - "Tastes Like Skimmed" (What in the name of God have they done to it to make it even healthier, whilst maintaining the 'taste'?) You can back this up by looking in the milk cabinet to see how much full-fat blue top is there. Supermarkets won't stock what doesn't sell!

The thinly veiled contempt we are held in by the elite of the diet experts, whose arrogant attitude is one of 'If you weren't such a glutton and a slob...' drives me wild when it's NOT OUR FAULT. If you eat the wrong foods (carbohydrate heavy) your willpower will not be enough to control your 'always hungry appetite.' You are being hijacked by dysfunctional, hormonal signalling; and biology will ALWAYS trump willpower.

Make your own by pouring cream into blue top.

If we all suddenly cut down drastically on carbohydrates - our species would not be able to feed itself.

That is a totally separate issue and your reply is rather off topic.

Not sure where that came from (has something been deleted?) but I don't think it's off-topic. It's a firmly-held belief among politicians and I suspect it's a big factor in the current dietary guidelines (and the recent crusade against meat).

Politicians don't know anything about agriculture. They have absolutely no idea how lifestock fit into the big picture, and they don't realise that the massive headache they've created with industrial meat-raising is entirely their own fault: proper farmers would have never chosen to do it that way.

The reality is that humanity would be able to feed itself much more efficiently if we all dropped carbs drastically. LCHF is not just healthy, it's ecologically sustainable. I might do a little rant about that topic later - it's interesting how the numbers work out.

biology will ALWAYS trump willpower.

Indeed. The advice to "eat less and do more exercise" completely ignores the fact that humans are not just passive bags of flesh into which fuel is poured.

My point is that refined carbohydrate is the problem. How we approach the subjects of supply is entirely a different matter.

The main problem we face as humanity? There are 25,000 more people on the planet today than there were yesterday - 82 million per year!

Amen! I see it too, overweight people with carts loaded with carb heavy products, a lot of them low fat. So sad. But I've also seen another trend in Aldi out here- they have a hard time keeping heavy cream in supply, and they now offer full fat plain Greek yogurt. And last time I was in there, a woman hit the heavy cream right before I got there and loaded up with probably 6 or 8 pints of it in a box. Should have asked if she was a low-carb-er. I also noticed that Atkins snack bars are getting popular as well. Not that I recommend them, but just illustrates that the LCHF trend seems to be growing out here.
