Hi my son was diagnosed with JIA yesterday and I’m looking through the booklet they gave me and it doesn’t give any information on checking his eyes? What will be different about them? What do they mean by ‘flare uo’ any help appreciated

It is best to ask the doctors. My granddaughter was diagnosed recently with JIA and one symptom was inflamed eyes which are being treated with eye drops - started off ever hour and now every two hours. The inflammation has gone. It is a condition triggered by JIA and is called uveitis. It is important to have regular checks because left untreated uveitis can lead to blindness. So as long as your son has regular eye checks he will be fine - and eye checks are not painful but the swollen eyes are. The doctors should know what checks your son will need. Also regular blood tests. However nowadays treatments are excellent and advances being made all the time and hope for better treatments, possibly a cure. Your son will be able to enjoy his life and be active. The diagnosis is frightening at first but there is a world of JIA warriors all leading fulfilled lives. Hope this helps.

Hi The condition is called uveitis and your son's eyes should be checked. The reason for this is that JIA can cause inflammation in the eye and sometimes there are no symptoms, especially in the early stages so children with JIA should always be referred to ophthalmologists. There is more information on the JIA website about uveitis: jia.org.uk/resource/eye-hea... I hope this helps.
