If you go on the PDSA website, you'll find a list of certain foods that are discouraged if you are an ITP patient. But, I believe that you would have to eat a huge amount of any one forbidden food to cause an increase or decrease in platelets.

No, but when my husband was on warfarin (which also thins your blood, albeit in a different way), he was warned by doctors about changing how much kale he ate as it has an appreciable effect on platelet levels (but not quality of platelets).

Wow, that's a bummer about kale because I use it in a smoothie. I wonder if spinach is the same.

I have read kale and other greens can be good for platelet counts. Who knows?

I did the food intolerance tests done by the Association for their research. My tests were negative. Conclusion of the study was that food intolerances are not relevant in ITP.

Ok... after hearing abt this test I was quite positive that elemanting some food might help in further destruction of the platlet....:( Thanks for sharing your experience.

A research project on Food Intolerance was recently completed by Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge UK and funded by the ITP Support Association. Sadly the conclusion has been that there is no,apparent link between food intolerance and ITP. The best, simple advice is to eat a balance diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and cut down on processed foods. But then this is simply the best approach of all of us whether we suffer from ITP,or not. There are of course things we as ITP sufferers need to avoid such as quinine, aspirin, ibuprofen or any products that contain them. The details of the food intolerance study can be viewed on the ITP Support Association website at itpsupport.org.uk. One other thing to underline is that as with anything ITP related it is always sensible to discuss your case with your own specialist before doing anything especially before taking any medication, herbal remedies, vitamins, or alternative medicines or diets. I mention this because it could do more harm than good and we have had cases where sufferers have taken alternative medicines/herbal remedies and made their situation worse and spent lots of money too !
