Hi. We were told it would be easier to wean my brother off ventilation if he had a tracky. We did a lot of thinking, I mean it is a huge thing.
I didn't want him to have it but I was pulled along by what tte Dr said.
Once the tracky was in. It allowed the physios to carry out suction of sputum.
Then put a speaking valve on as we called it. Allowing my brother. To try to speak. It took a long time before the tracky was actuaĺy removed.
I didn't like the look of the tracky hole/dent he had after the tracky was taken out. It seemed a bit untidy compared to others I hsve seen who have had trackys.
It's cuff up cuff down breathing and talking attempts.
The most important thing is to make sure that your sister is getting regular physio whilst still in ICU. So that she dies not end up with critically illness neuropathy and myopathy. Severe muscle wastage and ending up quadrapleagic.
I would sat yes to the tracky to help the drs. But add the provisi that physio on tge limbs will take place and not just concentrate on the tracky for breathing.
Good luck with your journey. Wishing your loved one a speedy recovery.
