Yes, I think it is very common /par for the course, for ITU ventilated patients, Covid or otherwise, to have recurrent infections ( for eg. urinary, sputum, trachy related or sometimes the IV lines) and it could be bacterial or fungal. ITU patients are very susceptible to opportunistic infections unfortunately both because of the nature of the underlying severe disease that has necessitated ITU and, because of the drugs-like high dose steroids- used to treat these critical illnesses, which suppress immune systems. Do you have a liaison sister who rings for a daily update? It might be a good idea to write a list of questions. Sometimes, speaking to the doctors can make you feel floored, especially if it’s more bad news. But after you’ve processed it, ask further questions through your Dad’s bedside nurse or the liaison sister. Best wishes 💐

We have members who have survived Covid and the complications you speak of, ( and many more). It is a truly disgusting and dangerous disease with many awful weapons in its arsenal BUT many people survive. Let us know how your Dad gets on.

Oh I appreciate that I really do and yes I will. Thank you

Hello, I'm sorry you and your family are having to deal with this. My husband had covid in the first wave . He picked up a myriad if infections whilst in ITU. It just seemed to be one after the other, they were all treated with antibiotics . As ROMM53 it is quite common in the ITU setting to pick up infections, as patients have compromised immunity and and are susceptible to them sadly ,

I'm so happy to hear a good ending. I hope he gets through it it's so hard he's been up and down for 17 days thankyou for your help.

It's possibly the hardest time of your life , it's a roller coaster of high anxiety - heightened by the fact you can't see your loved ones. Do you not have a daily catch up with the liaison team at your hospital that give you an overview ? x

in reply to Ferham

Yes it sure is, I'm the one who does the calling he's been moved hospital recently which I hear is a regular thing as they get pretty full, and they've give me updates but past few days haven't been able to get in touch much. But as for contacting me not had that tbh x

Morning. Sorry to hear. My Dad had COVID in the first wave. 3 weeks on a ventilator, when he came off and out of ICU and onto a ward he got pneumonia. Which was hard for him to fight and he was obviously not on the ventilator so conscious but we were told as everyone has said it is quite normal. After 8 weeks in hospital he did come home xx sending hugs xx

in reply to Sylvee1

That's amazing news for you. Thankyou for sharing restores my hope. Take care x

My sister is in ICU on a ventilator, we are on day 43, she has had countless infections, but has overcome them all. She is now weaning from the vent, your dad will continue to fight these with the help from microbiology, stay positive 👍🙏

I'm so glad your sister is comming through. Thankyou for sharing that with me it's so uplifting to hear x And a question to anyone are your loved one on a tracheostomy with these infections or intubated ?
