I think I was on trachy for about 2 weeks - I’ve got to say suctioning of the lungs when conscious was horrendous.
My delirium whilst in a semi- conscious state lasted about 11 days. It’s very difficult to gauge time in ICU.
I know more people are experiencing longer & potentially more intense delirium because of a variety of reasons.
Firstly, more Covid patients are proned & proned more frequently. For this reason, staff have to use more paralysing agent and send your loved one into deeper sedation so that they synchronise better with the ventilators.
The pandemic has caused shortages in preferred sedatives, medical staff have had to resort to older generation sedatives & paralysing agents which leads to patients taking longer to wake with an increased portion of delirium, myopathy & neuropathy cases.
Another issue with prolonged intubation is that a patient will continue to lose muscle each day, so they will be weaker & hence take longer to rehabilitate.
In 2016 I was on a trachy and ventilator for about 7 weeks. It took me more than 2 weeks to wake up properly from the coma. Whilst doing so I was fairly mad – my wife and the nurses were friends of mine in disguise, for example.
I have had to ask my wife! My operation was before Xmas. They tried to bring me out of sedation several times but it didn’t work. Before the end of December a tracky was fitted so until February I was partially sedated, on assisted breathing and in a state of delirium. In February they fitted voice boxes and over the following days tried different voices. My breathing was supported. I then tried my own voice by covering the tracky but for limited times. Finally the tracky was removed. I continued with O2 either by mask or through my nose.
Everybody is different and there will be many ups and downs, the downs can be quite low.
