My dad had an EMG test done today and the doctor suspect acute motor axonal neuropathy, it is not confirmed however I’d like to know more about this if anyone here has experienced this.
EMG test : My dad had an EMG test done today and... - ICUsteps
EMG test
I had what was described as peripheral neuropathy - the sensation was numbness, pins & needles & weakness - I regained sensation over time - although my finger tips still tingle slightly - almost like you touched a stinging nettle yesterday. I had no sensation on the tops of my feet - after about 3 months it started to come back and eventually did. I still have weakness, can’t undo lids, I drop things etc etc.
I have friends who have completely lost sensation or have more intense pain/ pins and needles, or numbness a few years after leaving ICU. I have heard that some of the paralysing agents are causing more cases of neuropathy & myopathy than normal. This is due to the sedative shortage worldwide and not a result of Covid
Acute motor axonal neuropathy is a type of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. There is information about it on the NHS website, nhs.uk/conditions/guillain-.... There are some case histories of this developing after a coronavirus infection. The main problems are inability to move your arms and legs and it can effect the person’s breathing.
The most commonly used treatment for Guillain-Barré syndrome is intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). When you have Guillain-Barré syndrome, the immune system (the body's natural defences) produces harmful antibodies that attack the nerves.
