Almost by definition, if you are in ICU, you are or have been close to death. An induced coma may be what is needed for the body to recover. Unfortunately, sometimes, patients do not recover and die. But what is the alternative? Do nothing?

The medical team may be able to give you a realistic assessment of the chances of the patient recovering. Yes, some elderly patients do recover from an induced coma or they wouldn't dedicate all those resources to trying to heal them.

I’m a cardiac radiographer and I have rarely seen very elderly people on ICU have a good outcome. I was in ICU on a ventilator over Christmas and there were doubts whether I would make it through sepsis and respiratory failure. I‘m 37 and previously healthy. Survival depends on so many things for example if your kidneys, liver etc are doing ok.

I think that most doctors won’t put older people in ITUs because of the high chances of poor outcomes etc. I think with the ageing population though that will change.

Vicky, I am curious as to what doctors and technicians consider elderly? Is 58 elderly? 65? Or do you mean patients in their 80s?

I would say over 80 is considered elderly. No way would someone in their 50/60s be considered elderly 🙂

In 2011 I was put into an induced coma for close to four months. From what I remember it was sn incredible experience. I have no memory of pain or suffering, which is shocking considering what I endured. All I remember is a beautiful, green landscape and the freedom to walk and run,( which considering that I'm paralyzed is pretty good). As I drifted in and out of coma over the three month period, I started to realize that life inside my coma was better that without. I don't say this to cause you pain. I say this because I know that if your loved one is passing away in a coma. Thier brain is creating the most beautiful landscape for them. Chances are that you are there to, just for them. Please find peace in this, that passing away in an induced coma is (from my experience) incredibly peaceful.

God bless you and your family!
