My trachy was in for 5 weeks and when it was removed I had no after effects. I am aware that this is not always the case but I hope you are lucky like I was.

I had mine for just over 4 weeks in 2008. Mine after it was removed had joined with my windpipe and outer skin so it used to suck in when I swallowed. But it gave me a tickle in the throat which made me cough. It is not any were near as bad now and I still get a raspy voice but that may be the inhalers I take.

I had my trachy for just over 8 weeks after being on a ventilator for 19 days, I have had no problems, just a tiny scar that we all have as a memento.

It's probably a PAP (positive airway pressure machine) it's to help him breathe, it can be very daunting for relatives, my wife became an expert on knowing what machine done what, but she did have 3 months sitting by my bed everyday.
