I get horrible electrical charges through my head. I think I may faint. Anyone had these or knows the cause?

Hello,

You didn't say how long they last or how often they occur, but it could possibly be trigeminal neuralgia. I have this and take medicine to control it. A neurologist is the doctor to see, your primary doctor would refer you. For more information see: mayoclinic.com/health/trige...

Thanks leigha for replying.Taken me over an hour to actually be able to reply -keeps freezing or not responding!

I don't really understand the term neuralgia, only that it is pain.

In fact I am at present seeing a neurologist for tremors, but I haven't mentioned about these pains in my head. Do you get them too?

Best wishes to you.

Hi again,

I still occasionally get breakthrough pain, but it is mostly controlled by medication. The pain is so intense it is considered the worst pain known. The primary medication used in the States is Carbamazepine, and it is often also used to diagnose trigeminal neuralgia. If one is having an attack and takes a Carbamazepine pill, and the pain goes away, then tn is the diagnosis. However, that is not the only way it is diagnosed.

Here is a site for the Trigeminal Neuralgia Support Site in the States, along with the direct site to 'frequently asked questions':

and, Home:

I sure wish you well, please let me know if I can answer any more questions. Let us know how it goes!

Hello again

I have heard that carbamazepine is used for migraines. It is also used in the treatment of epilepsy, but my GP thinks I am already on enough meds. Just been given flucoxacillin as well, following a bad fall.

I know of the Mayo clinic, but I am having disastrous problems trying to connect to anything. In fact I was amazed that I managed to open your messages. If I reply to healthunlocked my messages never send either?

I will now try your other site, and thankyou for your help.

If you would like to give me your email address that would work better for me at present!

Hi,

I would send you my email but, to tell truth, am feeling foggy today and not sure how to pm you. Don't want it listed for everyone, by mistake!

Yes, carbamazepine is also used for migraines and epilepsy. However, if you have trigeminal neuralgia and need treatment, it is the first line of defense. I also take topiramate, for both the tn and migraines and epilepsy. (I've got a host of 'stuff' going on!) If your GP thinks you are already on too much, that can make sense of course, but if you are suffering so much and do have trigeminal neuralgia, then s/he is ignoring something vital. I will say that many/most doctors do not like to diagnose tn; it took many years for me to get my diagnosis and I suffered tremendously and needlessly in horrid agony until finally I was put in hospital and the staff neurologist diagnosed me immediately.

Sorry you are having computer issues and wish I could help more. Best of luck!!

Dear Leigha

I am so sorry to hear that you are poorly, and hope you soon feel better. I can understand about using email addresses. As it is we get far too much spam!

Do you suppose that mine might be TN? It is not facial but top right of my head. It doesn't last long but is quite frequent and quite debilitating. When I next see the neurologist I will try and remember to tell him about it. Most doctors will only deal with one item at a time,so they tell me. As we get older we have more than one problem...

Thankyou for your reply. I am still amazed that your message actually opened up. I am having so much trouble.est wishesto you

Hello again,

TN will be electrical type and very painful type sensations which feel like they are going through your head/face. Everyone is a bit different. I have both typical and atypical; so another kind I have is centered in one ear only. I sure can't say if you have this or not but when you talk about the electrical type feelings and having them go through your head, that has me think of tn.

Yes, I am in a setback now but am glad to answer your questions. I so hope you can get some questions from your doctor. Tell him this has really been disturbing you!

Good luck!!
