Does anyone know if you can have a tattoo done while on Warafrin? I only want a small one on my shoulder or top of my arm.

I can't give you a clear answer on this. Obviously the risks with tattoo clinics/parlours can be infections if things are not 100 percent clean, and also some people may have allergic reactions. Also with our autoimmune conditions I guess what does make you react one time, may not the next or vice versa. I think you have to weigh up the risks. With the way my ailments react, (however I do have 5 overlapping conditions including Hughes), I would not myself dare. A couple of articles here:

Hi,there is an obvious risk of infection & it bleeding whilst on warfarin & Hughes.

But.....since I was diagnosed with Hughes & being on warfarin I have actually had 6 tattoos which range from ankles, hip, top of arm, shoulder & wrist........I actually didn't bleed much at all...which surprised me, but my friend thats in the army & does hundreds of tattoos did mine....& she is aware of all my complications so she is carefull not to cut as deep as probably she would with anyone else, also importantly I know she is clean!

I think it is down to the individual how you would react as everyone is different, I'm just a stuborn cow that just keeps trying to do what I want to do whatever the outcome will be & suffer fr it later!! like me headbanging for the last 2 days & nights at a biker rally this weekend :) I'm aching like hell, hardly walk, sooooo tired & was on painkillers to carry on!.....but I had a fantastic few days!!!! so to me it's well worth what I know I'll get over the next few days.......good luck with decision. x

Well i'm a APS (hughes) sufferer(?) only on aspirin at the moment....and I have 2 large tattoos one of which is my profile pic but is too big to get all of it in so you can only see th fairy.....this is at the bottom of my neck between my shoulder blades that kind of area.........my other tattoo is from half way down my outer calf down around my ankle & along a bit of my outer foot........I didn't bleed at all with either of them & they both healed very well & fairly quickly with no probs but I did go to a trusted tattooist & picked simple uncomplicated designs......one of my many things to do by time i'm 40......still got 6yrs to go and a number of things left to do!!!

I had a small butterfly done on my shoulder last year and no bleeding and it healed quickly

I had my nose pierced and it was no problem. It didn't bleed a bit and healed quickly. If you are afraid to get your tatoo be a rebel and get a nose piercing.

Thank you Justine, that is reassuring. Jean I think you are very brave I couldn't face that!

I'm an "older lady" so I don't understand the attraction to tattoos....but young people seem to love them.....My attitude is to avoid any action/procedure that can stir up my immune system.......in my opinion cosmetic surgery and the like is just stressing the immune system...and who know what "genetic" predisposition can be "turned on". There is so much we don't understand about the "switching on and off" process in our bodies....

My doctor had a fit when i suggested getting one. I was going to get the breast cancer ribbon and be sponsered for doing it but i was told in no uncertain terms it was a no-no
