Hematoma?

I’ve had a pretty tough couple of weeks. I had a really nasty seizure because of my epilepsy, unfortunately while I was walking down concrete steps leaving a building. As a result I managed to take the worst fall on my face. Somehow I avoided breaking anything, but 4 days in hospital under observation with concussion (worries about a bleed on the brain thankfully not fulfilled) and absolutely spectacular bruising covering most of my face because of the warfarin as well as some stitches in my forehead.

Most of this is now resolving, but I still have a sore hard lump about a cm across on my upper lip, where I split it open, although the split has now healed. The doctors at the hospital said this was a hematoma and would resolve, but also obviously hadn’t heard of APS. Must admit starting to worry a little that it isn’t going away and not sure whether to talk to someone about it. As systems start to close in the U.K. for non emergency stuff over Xmas really need to decide if I try to see someone.

As you probably know, warfarin interferes with the last stage of the coagulation cascade. My only advice might be to try warm compress a couple of times a day. Good luck and happy holidays!

Hello Gilly, sorry to read things have not been so good, I have taken warfarin for 16 years and at times have been erratic in keeping my INR in range. I have experienced two very bad ‘bashes’ in that time with incredibly bad bruising and swelling, much worse I feel due to warfarin. My experience of this says, as bad as it looks, as sore as it feels it will heal. However you can expect it to take longer than feels natural. This feels a worry as you look in a mirror once a day, once an hour even. It’s no different you wail. But it is ….. it’s just the discolouring and any swelling takes a time to move away. My only advice would be if you self test, do so regularly to ensure you stay within your given range. Enjoy the holidays and take it easy.

hi so sorry to hear about your problems. With regards to the haematoma - I can tell you this much. I have APS and am on warfarin but a few years ago I had to have surgery to close a hole in my heart. This entailed a tube being inserted into my heart through my thigh to insert the device and one on the other leg through the vein to take the camera. After the op I had two large lumps on each thigh about the size of a big pea. After a week they got smaller until they gradually disappeared.

If you are still on warfarin the lump shouldn’t get bigger as it’s just a build up of blood trying to heal the area and you should see it be re absorbed

If it doesn’t go away they can sort it with plastic surgery.

Enjoy your Christmas. 🎅🌲🎄

Please keep a close eye, they can be hard, especially if you have knocked yourself. if it does not settle down do ring your GP. MaryF

hi GillyA. You will get better 3 weeks ago I dropped something on my foot causing a haematoma. I was told it would take a couple of months to get better. It is improving slowly. I have aps and lupus so on a lot of warfarin. I was told the blood would disperse by itself and it is going. Just keep your eyes open for infection as you’d need antibiotics. Try not to worry and have a good xmas

Thank you, good to get some idea of how long it may last. Already been through the infection/antibiotic loop. Thankfully that now seems ok.
