Diet Replacement

I have a history of 2 blood clots, with an INR of 3 - 4, target 3.5. I am triple positive for

the antibodies. Food with vit.K in cause eratic INR, so I am at present avoideing all the

lovely green veg. I have read just this week about a supplement called "Dementia

Guard", which is a vitamin complex of K2 & K3. I have Sjogrens and Hypothroidism, though my thyroid at present is running a bit fast.I am increasingly

worried about my Brain as it has deteriorated a lot in the last 12 months. There is also

a possibility of Autonomic Dysfunction , which can occur with APS & Sjogrens. I am

very keen to try this supplement, as presumably each tablet has a specific amount of

K2 & K3 in it. The advert states, Scientific studies have identified links between

Diet, Dementia and Brain Function. Has anyone any views on this? Thank you

HI, please do go to your GP and or Consultant, it is not advisable to add in any supplement without supervision by your medical team, also this may very well affect your INR and cause you problems. In addition to your Hughes Syndrome/APS and Sjogrens, it is a good idea to regularly check your levels of vitamin D, B12, Folate, Ferritin and a decent Thyroid panel as this can all cause problems in terms of brain fog etc. The GP can test most of it, but some of us prefer a more detailed Thyroid panel which we order ourselves. I notice what you way about it being fast at the moment, a lot of us also join Thyroid UK and load up our results on there, minus personal details as the administrators on there know what they are doing and are very helpful. Basically taking 'k' supplements can cause you a problem on anticoagulation, which is why you need the correct medical advice. MaryF

Hi Mary

You mentioned vitamins that help with brain fog.

Are there any foods that help with this ?

I am aware of the foods that should not be eaten with warfarin but are there any that are not on the list but make the brain fog worse ?

My wife is diagnosed APS and has both brain fog and migraines.

Also any practical tips for dealing with fatigue would also be good.

Are there any good websites that give practical information ?

Thanks

Don

Your best path with this, is to go to the GP or consultant and check certain things out, certainly for me when my D or Iron or B12 is lower this has an effect on my brain fog as does any flare going on, and also when I used to eat gluten that made it an awful lot worse, as it is possible to be gluten intolerant, which I certainly am, rather than having fully blown Coeliac Disease.

Has your wife's INR been checked lately?

Another big problem for me for brain fog is Thyroid function, now I have sorted that out, (it was missed for years due to narrow and unreliable testing for years), which is why I ordered my own tests), my brain fog is a lot better.

My diet is Mediterranean, minus gluten, with a few Brazil nuts added in for the missing Selenium that I would get from wholemeal bread. I do take a probiotic, along with m Spatone Iron, and a few other things, but these are all checked by my consultant and my nutritionist, and I don't take Warfarin. certainly if I did take it some of my supplements and some of my diet might upset an IRN target. I hope this answers your question. MaryF

You can eat greens when on Warfarin but you must try to keep the same daily amount! And when you start eating greens you will have to take a little more of your Warfarin as greens will lower your INR.

The word for us with APS is CONSTANTITY with most of the things we do when we are on Warfarin.

But especially with brusselsprouts, broccoli, spenach etc as they have a lot of K-vit in them.
