How do you ask your family dr for a referral to a specialist. I don't want him thinking I doubt his ability. He's a good dr and listens

As I understand it you have a right to ask for a referral to a consultant. I have always just asked my GP if she would do a referral letter and she has always been pleased to.
Where are you from?
