I take a Warfin & I swell up like an elephant-everywhere, I have a migrane, and feel sick. I have read that they use different filler & dyes that can cause problems. Designer16

As far as I know Coumadin and Marevan are two types of warfarin. There may be other types. Each are different in their composition and not interchangeable. Some people find they do better on one than the other. So yes you could be reacting to something in that particular "recipe".

I have heard some say that they can't tolerate generic brands.

I can't take warfarin, gave me nausea, terrible runs and spent nearly 3 days in bed, was so ill on it, the symptoms got worse as I increased the dose. However I tolerate phenindione just fine.

As you probably know, the active ingredient in any name brand is the same as in the generic, ( if the time span has elapsed to allow generics.) But what isnt as widely known is that generics often ( in the US) are allowed a large margin of wiggle room in the exact amount of the active ingredient they provide. A doctor who was formerly a drug company employee told me this and said that with most drugs, especially antibiodics, blood levels even out over a few days so the amount of fluctuation in active ingredient is not that important to health. With warfarin, ( generic Coumadin,) the variation does not matter in 99% of patients. But he strongly advised patients to stick to name brands for short term steroid use.

Of course, generic warfarin is made with different inactive ingredients and it is possible that your body doesn't like one of those. You could get what here in the US is called a Merk Manuel and sit down with your doc, a nurse, or a phartmacist and try to ID a likely offender and then be able to scrutinize other medication options.

OR, just stick with Coumadin. I stayed with Coumadin for those initial years when my antibodies were high as I then had a harder time keeping a steady INR on warfarin. But since going gluten free I do stay regular on the cheaper generic warfarin, ( which is nice that the cost of something went down as the grocery bills went up after making that dietary switch.)

I'm one of those that do better on name brand Coumadin than generic Warfarin. I'm consistently in my target INR when on Coumadin.
