Hello everyone, I was wondering if dying my hair would be safe while I am on HIV treatment. Thank you!

Now that's a new one for me...

I cannot see any reason why dying your hair should be any different for you than any other person. I know lots of people who are living with HIV who do dye their hair. HIV i-base have an online Q&A Service at i-base.info/qa/ask-a-questi...

you could ask them.

I was looking at your previous posts this morning. You and your partner using face masks is, in the nicest possible way, a little extreme. I have known lots of people who have had CD4 counts much lower than yours and VL counts far higher and they did not need to be protected in such a way.

I know it is hard at the moment but as others have said it will get easier in time. It is not that long ago that the treatment guidelines here in the UK would not have started anyone on treatment with a CD4 count of 200 or more.

Learn all you can about living with HIV, take things one step at a time, ask lots of questions and finally, don't spend your pension, you will need it.

All the best for now,

Kind Regards,

Paul

Your post was very informative and made me feel better.

I loved your post, It reminded me how I used a forum when I was alone with so many questions. I thought I might pass on HIV with tears and I was crying so much. you cant. But its so easy to get worried. Lots of love. You are free to live as normally ish as you can.

The dying hair is safe. However, try to avoid hair bleaching with peroxide content over 12%, or ask for help good professionals to do so. Anyway, try to avoid the contact of color mix with your skin, because high concentration of peroxide is able to affect the stratum corneum of your skin, in other words, damage it. So if the CD4 count is low, it may takes long time for healing of damaged areas.

I am using a non permant dye that fades away with time. It covers the grey hair.

Had to give you a proper reply as soon as I noticed this. I used to be a colourist and I did quite well at it. You can dye your hair with any thing you like. If you were used to using powder bleach with 12% peroxide when you were negative there's nothing in your meds that have oxygen and heat in the contraindications list, that is all that comes out of the peroxide in all that fizzing it does. There was even a theory before treatments were available that topical hyperoxygenation could do some good, bacteria and viruses including HIV have a smaller tollerence to oxygen levels than we do, so if you have areas such as the blood vessels under a peroxide burn which is just oxidised skin cells, all the blood passing by would be zapped clean.

Or you could drink it and burp for hours,

Well we were clutching at any straws we could find.

But go lighter than your natural colour, if you were dark brown but have gone grey, don't put your original colour on it, your skin lost pigment too so it won't suit you now. go at least 2 shades up. Better still go mad and do it bright .....,?
