missed heart beats ..

about a month ago i experianced my heart missing a beat it did not happen with any regularity but continued over 2-3 days slowly becoming less often untill it self corrected, then about a week ago after walking quite far and fast it has reoccured.i went to my gp when this first happened and was given an ecg which they said looked ok<although it was only a quick one>and on that visit both blood pressure and pulse were raised and the gp made an appointment for cardiologist to be on the safe side, then i visited the gps the next week and then at that point my blood pressure and pulse were ok.. i am 33 and yes i do smoke unfortunately and did/do drink probably too much coffee but since the first episode have cut both down alot and changed to decaff coffee..but i am sat here still worrying about what could be causing these missed heart beats, after a missed beat i can feel my heart beating not amayzingly hard but hard enough for me too notice it,,it doesnt seem to beat any faster or slower ?and so am left just wondering what could be the cause?this time it hasnt completely gone as it did the first time it happened but it doesnt happen all the time either just every so often sometimes just once and sometimes a few times...i would be really grateful if any one has any info or knowledge about this or if any1 has experianced it themselves if you could leave a reply,...many thanks,..x

Don't worry, it's the worst thing you can do!

If you wore an ECG monitor for 24 hours and it didn't show up anything, then your GP has done the right thing and is sending you to a cardiologist. SVT's don't show up when you want them too!

I can only go by my experience and say, I have SVT (supra venticular tacycardia) it's an irregular and very fast heartbeat, mine won't go back to a normal sinus rhythm so I'm on medication.

I'm sending you a link to read, just in case this is what you actually have and it shows ways you are able to stop the rhythm. Apparently SVT happens more to women than men.

I was a smoker and drank coffee like water. Now I don't smoke, have two cups of coffee a day and the rest is water.

Let us know how you get on. xx

hi witty

thank you for your reply and i have looked at the link you left me and did find it helpful,.did you could you ever have missed heart beats ? although my pulse and blood presure were high on he day i visited my gp and it was happening when i returned the next week my heart wasnt skipping beats and my blood pressure and pulse were good,..did your blood rate and pressure go up when you have these episodes?im not sure that my pulse goes faster or slower when it skips a beat?and so this is leaving me little confused as it just seems to skip a beat??i am trying not to worry though thanks as i know this just makes it feel worse..the first time it happened it self corrected and went then about 2 weeks later it just started again although it doesnt happen all day just comes and goes?? i will visit my gps again and ask about longer ecg as i didnt have a 24 or 72 hr test it was just a normall quick one but it was when it skipped a beat ,...so i will discuss that ,,.could you just let me know if you had missed heart beats in your symptoms??? and thannk you very much for responding to me... louise x x

Hi Louise,

I already knew I had high blood pressure which is treated with medication, then palpitations which you don't mention and sweating which was horrendous (it was like someone had switched a tap on my head). When they did the ECG in the surgery (24 hours) it showed ectopic beats, which my GP said was SVT. This obviously have been proven. You can miss two heart beats, it's really nothing to worry about, SVT, if that's what you have is rarely life threatening.

As you will have an appointment with a Cardiologist, he/she will probably recommend a longer ECG monitor. You are going to be with the right people who will be able to help, wait and see what he/she says, and please don't worry.

xx

thank you so much for your reply,..and that is the case no sweats and no high blood pressure at present,..so i will try not to worry too much although as you know thrugh experiance when you feel your heart doing strange things it does become quite consuming,i will wait for cardio app although gp says it can take a while to happen,..of course the gp has signed me off work temporarily and so of course other worries happen then ie bills child costs etc,..but i know everybody across the contry has these worries ey,...thanks again ,,and i hope you are ok in yourown life ,,.. louise xx
