There is no such thing as a simple faint!

There is no such thing as a simple faint! In many cases, fainting can be an early warning sign of an abnormal heart rhythm which is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death – a devastating condition that kills 100 000 people in the UK alone each year.

My first ever faint (hit my head) 6 weeks ago when I was at work, aged 49 turned out to be due to polymorphic ventricular tachycardia due to a prolonged QT interval. Could easily have been dismissed as a simple faint, and the second one in hospital 3 days later, and the other 3 episodes of v-tach as presyncope or pre-fainting. Had it not been for my pacemaker being checked and recording the incidents. I also did a wireless download on my monitor. Also three events happened in hospital after being admitted and caught on the cardiac monitor - and again the pacemaker. Otherwise I would probably have been dismissed as an anxious middle aged female having a panic attack or dehydrated. In fact the paramedics that came to my workplace to take me to hospital, gave me paracetamol for my sore head and walked me down in the lift and outside to the ambulance, saying behind my back - it usually does the trick! Meaning the paracetamol had somehow given me a miraculous recovery. Obviously, my life threatening abnormal heart rhythm has resolved without intervention by the time they got there and did an ECG and found everything was normal at that moment, except a prolonged QT interval. But a lot of time these cases may well be a simple faint, for lots of reasons that are not as harmful- but they definitely need to be investigated further.

It is so good to see you bring this up. There is nothing normal about hitting the floor and not knowing what happened. My first I had no recollection of it even starting. I woke up facedown on concrete to big bumps on the front of my fore head. I hurt from head to toe. I did manage to get up and thought I got into bed. I woke up, I realized I was looking at my bathroom ceiling. I fell a second time on the back of my head between the tub and toilet. Somehow I survived. Now in the US they are really pushing about head injuries but 2 1/2 years ago you never heard of a fib or anything else like that because it was all about Covid. It seems like the numbers of aphids have really grown since Covid struck I wonder if they have checked to see if there’s anything tying the two together. I had not had Covid. I only took the first two shots for Moderna. Thankfully, I had doctors who were right on the case and sent me immediately to a neurologist. Everything else in the head was ruled out. It did take almost 8 months to discover a fib because it likes to play hide and seek. After having a loop recorder implanted, they finally caught it.

A head injury with or without afib can be deadly first time, no matter what caused the black out. As we age, I think it gets even more serious. I had the trunk of my car, tap my head one day, and I ended up with a double concussion. That one and then I went inside, somehow lost my balance again and ran my head into the wall. My doctor said that’s common with concussion.
