Watch, Listen and Learn: What is a pacemaker? Why do I need one and how it is implanted? What is remote monitoring? and what happens next?
I was the 306th person to have an ablation for SVT and the first to have it done twice! It went wrong post op, my heart went into non correctable atrial flutter and I had to have a second operation a couple of days after the first one. They made a teaching video of the second operation and involved me in their pioneering work which I found very interesting.
That was about 25 years ago. Ever since I have occasionally had Mobitz II AV blocks and lots of ectopics and was told then that I'd need a pacemaker eventually. I was only 24 at the time and was told to avoid caffeine and alcohol, take aspirin, keep as fit as possible and go back in 5 year's time when there would be new technology for the batteries.
After a while I got used to it, gave up the aspirin and got on with life, rather than going back.
It's now 25 years later and I'm getting too many AV blocks to be manageable and am needing some help. I'm in a different part of the country now and the local cardiologist is patronising and dismissive so I'm having to gather my own information.
I'm looking forward to seeing this event and learning lots from it to help me.
