Lost sense of smell.

Losing the sense of smell is a strange thing. You don't know you can't smell something until someone else says they can. Mine went about 2 years ago. There was an unrecognisable stink to everything. Horrible. Over several months that waned until I can't smell anything, terrible if someone farts in the elevator. So I have been on a quest to find out what caused it. Three things happened around the time it started going. I was knocked unconscious after crashing my bike while warning drivers to move their cars before they were towed away; A spay gun blew backwards while cleaning it and blasted pure acetone up my nose and in my eyes, and I had half of my thyroid cut out. Brain scans eliminated the first so I have been blaming it on the acetone for years. But after having the hemithyroidectomy my TSH levels have been rising to 6.6 but the free thyroid has remained stable within limits. But I found a condition called subclinical hypothyroidism that matches that condition. I also found reference linking high TSH and declining sense of smell. I finally found a doctor who prescribed Thyroxene and I have been taking those for just over a week. This morning I was at the breakfast table and my wife was peeling an orange. I got a sudden burst of orange smell. Intense. Now I am holding the peel and just enjoying sniffing it. I am hoping that my sense of smell is coming back.

Interesting post with the Thyroxine cure, it will give inspiration for others to investigate their thyroid should they find they have lost their sense of smell.
