Hi Longmire
Many people have palpitations. It simply means that they are aware of their own heartbeats. Regarding having the occasional alcoholic drink, everyone is different. For some people it can be a trigger for an arrhythmia but for others it can have a calming effect. The only way you will know how it affects you is to give it a try.
As Ian says, palpitations are very common and can continue for years without much effect. However if they happen frequently or last for hours on end, it's not the best nor if they really thump.
But on the plus side, an unsettled heart can make us pay attention to lifestyle and watch things like alcohol that, for some, can be triggers for arrhythmia. Excessive caffeine, eating unwisely, being overweight, and at the other end of the scale too much strenuous exercise can all lead, eventually, to complaints from one's heart.
Hello Longmire,
I've written in a couple of times regarding the problem of palpitations and ectopic heartbeats - it must be possible for you to search for these on this site. I think you will find them reassuring. I've had palpitations and ectopic hearts beats so bad that they actually wake me up of a night, and I've had many tests of one kind or another. And I'm okay. Well, just to say that my ectopic heartbeats and palpitations began when I was about thirty. I'm now seventy-eight, and since the onset of this (extremely common) problem I must have drunk enough beer to launch a battleship. See how you go. Life without beer is no life
