Breathlessness - mitral valve regurgitation

Hello - I had an echocardiogram in February 24 where I was diagnosed with mild to moderate mitral valve regurgitation - no real symptoms . However I now find it impossible to sleep on my left side as I am very breathless . I am very fit , not overweight at all and only 58 . Am I being paranoid ? Should I contact my cardiologist ?

hi, I was diagnosed with mv regurgitation in December 2022 already at the severe stage (I have since had repair) and I had the same issue sleeping on my left side. Feeling that unless I hyperventilated I couldn’t breathe, fluttering of heart and swelling under ribs. Pre-diagnosis I thought it was the menopause or stress but clearly it wasn’t.

Go and have it checked out. They will soon tell you if it’s nothing serious. Take care x

Hi. I had the same when I was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and found it difficult to sleep and walk upstairs. I was 30 when I discovered I had heart failure. I would suggest getting this checked out too. I was prescribed diuretics to help clear the fluid which, in my case, was causing the problem. I hope things get better for you.

Just wondering how you are and if they found the reason for your breathlessness. I didn't think this symptom occurred at the mild to moderate stage. Wishing you all the best.

They were very reassuring . LA has increased in size but told no AF so keep going atm. How are you doing

Glad they found out the cause quickly. Good news that the increase in size has not disrupted your electrics and there is no AF. Hopefully they will keep a closer eye on you. This is very much an emotional rollercoaster that we are on! I have had 3 echos so far and each one has brought me news I didn't want! Now I have three valves leaking - first the mitral, then the tricuspid, now the aortic, plus mild pulmonary hypertension. Looking at a multi-valve op in future. You can only worry so much... Therefore currently on Mission Enjoyment/Seize the day - holidays booked for October and December.

Make sure you are treating yourself. Wishing you all the best x

Look after yourself - it’s really hard isn’t it ? One thing progresses to another . Sending best wishes x
