Calling All Readers!

This is our May 2020 Reading Rabbits Book Posting. You can post your comments and suggestions about any book/magazine/newspaper that does/doesn't have to do with any medical issues on this posting. You can mention about your favorite authors, as well. This posting will be pinned to the Pinned Posts for easier access.

I had started reading: "The Outsider", by Stephen King a few days ago. It started out a little slowly, but it's picking up some steam. The story is dealing with a crime that was done to a young boy that was on a Little League team and a lot of the evidence from the witnesses that are being interviewed by Detective Anderson say that they believe it was the actual Coach who was behind the horrible crime. The boy was 11-years-old.

I'm right now on page 46. The book is 561 pages when you include the Author's Note from Stephen King. I will give some updates on how far I have gotten when it's possible.

Okay, now to you! What have you all been reading since last month's Monthly Book Posting? Can't wait to hear all about it!

Hi,

I'm not reading a book at the moment because I'm busy doing an Open University Future Learn screen writing course. If I get a chance to read a book I will put a post on the site.

TT x.

The Open University Future Learn Screen Writing course sounds fun. How many weeks/days is it?

ThyroidThora profile image
ThyroidThoraβ€’ in reply toActivity2004

There are loads of online courses that start on various dates throughout the year. The screenwriting course is just 2 weeks but it has been extended so that those accessing it can finish it. I recently completed a creative writing course that lasted 8 weeks. You enrol online and when the course start you get an email that you click on, log on and then start that week's learning. A new email is sent every week for that week's modules.

This sounds really good to know! Thank you for letting us know about it.πŸ˜€πŸ‘

Hi Leah, I’m glad you’re enjoying The Outsider so it will be good to hear how you get on.

I’ve just finished reading Jack Kerouac’s lost novel The sea is my brother and I love how he writes because you can imagine yourself being there as his writing is so descriptive as he captures the mood the smells and how he describes the emotions of his characters is so astute I do envy people who can write like this.

It’s about a merchant seaman who meets some people one is a college lecturer who is disenchanted and he joins him and goes to sea on a merchant vessel and it’s captivating.

A great post Leah πŸ‘πŸ˜€

Wow! I'm glad you enjoyed the Lost Novel. How long was it? It seemed like you had just started it a little while ago recently. :-)

β€’ in reply toActivity2004

Hi Leah it's only 145 but whats great is there are other short stories of his. 😊

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

That reminds me of some of James Patterson's books. They have very short chapters, but still have a lot to say in the stories themselves. :-)

β€’ in reply toActivity2004

I like that as it keeps the interest up 😊

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

Yes! That's right and you feel like you have accomplished a goal every time you finish a book. :-)

I'm not really a book reader but I do read a lot of magazines, mainly true life story and health ones.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

That's okay! What magazine or article are you reading about this week so far?

β€’ in reply toActivity2004

I read Love It, Take a Break, Bella, Woman's Own, Chat etc. I read an article last week about a young lad that had the same condition as my 4 year old granddaughter, JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis), it was interesting.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

That's good that you were able to catch up on all those articles/magazines. My goal is to read as many books and be done with them by the time the lockdown ends for all of us (no matter where we are living). :-)

β€’ in reply toActivity2004

I think you might succeed in that one. The current situation isn't going to end any time soon.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

I have a feeling you're right about that one. The worst part is, if you listen to the TV or radio, everyone is being told any day now it'll be done, but I know that's wrong.

β€’ in reply toActivity2004

I know, I look at the worse case scenario and stick to it. If people stop going against the rules then it would be over sooner.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

I believe it! There was a news report today at breakfast saying that there were people all together and throwing some party. I don't get how they think they are above the rest of us and not think they won't get sick! It's terrible, but what can someone do if they are home watching this? I haven't been out of my house since I stopped working at the end of Friday, March (don't laugh!) 13th.

I have so much to say about this, hopefully I will get to it tomorrow. And it's World Book Night next week...!

But wouldn't it be a nice thing to post this to the Positive Wellbeing in Isolation group as well? I would be up the creek without a paddle without reading, I must say! :-D More on this one soon...

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

The posting will be posted on Positive Wellbeing in the next few weeks. I do their postings at the last week of each month for the new month. Thank you for asking about it! :-)

Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply toNugger

Oh, new tiles for the bathroom? A few years ago, I had to get a repair person to come and put in tiles since some started to fall off the wall. First time for anything-- and everything, I guess. :-)

Not a tile in this house! Going to change that

Activity2004 profile image

β€’ in reply toActivity2004

All the characters in the book ended up having their lives changed romantically at the end and yes I enjoyed it and it took my mind off the covid 19 situation for a while.

I have been so looking forward to this Leah, I am always looking for new reads

These are the ones I have on the go

1) Pure white and Deadly, How sugar is killing us and what we can do to stop it, by John Yudkin.

2) My Life by David Jason

3) The Stranger's Wife by Anna-Lou Weatherley

4) The Assistant by S K Tremayne

The one I was reading last month - House of lies by Ian Rankin was a bit of a disappointment, the book just never really took off.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply toKitten-whiskers

Wow! That’s a great list of books to be starting soon. Sorry the House of Lies wasn’t the way you were expecting it to be. There had been a book I read years ago like that and I kept going to see if it was going to get better!πŸ˜€πŸ‘

I read it a couple of years ago. I've not bought a book for a while now and have just started browsing for a good read. I had to stop reading for a while due to a surgery I had but that's pretty much settled down now. xx

I am a big Stephen King fan, I enjoyed his books and his films and he always turned up in his films a bit like Alfred Hitchcock. I think IT had to be my favorite. Do you know all his books, well mostly all on them where based on night terrors he suffered from all his life. That's where he got all his ideas. xx

Congratulations! Your badge is assigned, now.

Things with Bunny are good. No worries, but she did scratch a little too closely to her eye recently. Not a good idea since none of the Vets here are willing to see non-emergency appointments for pets and/or humans.

Just finished you and me always by Jill mansell this morning which I really enjoyed especially the scene where life changed at the drop of a hat for one of the characters who kept having dating disasters and got what she wanted at the end of the book showing that life can change unexpectedly at any time.

HI Hidden ,

The ending of your book reminds me somewhat of how "The Things We Do For Love" ends up ending. Things aren't always how they seem to be and they are always a surprise every so often. :-)

Started a new book tonight called sunshine at the comfort food cafe by Debbie Johnson which I am enjoying some far.

Reading books isn't cancelled though for entertainment.

Last year my abusive parents had demanded I stay at that job that I left back in November due to bullying off management there and I had said about the bullying and all they said was I was to ignore them!

If it had been colleagues on my level then yes with them I can ignore them as there's not a lot they can do to me but some things you shouldn't ignore though and problems don't just go away because you ignore them.

Then they had this warped idea that staying in that job had magical powers to keep me safe from another blood clot which was crackers really as anyone can have a blood clot even those who have no history of them and they can happen to people sat at home minding their own business and no mine wasn't all to do with looking for another job when it happened! It probably would have happened anyway no matter what I did or didn't do as things can and do happen and no one is to blame same as this outbreak no ones to blame its just one of those things that happens.

Then after I had been ordered to stay at that job I had an interview for a post at reception at a and e at one of the local hospitals and had gone anyway and tried my best but it wasn't to have been.

Then after work that Friday the day I had the interview I had received a lecture about staying at that job and I had been at the end of my rope that evening and had shouted what part of I don't want to be at that f ing job anymore don't you understand and my friends had said how I must have been at the end of my tether to have shouted that as they say I wouldn't have shouted that for no reason and they said how what had upset me was their attitude rather than the job in itself as I do know the worst thing is I don't get the job and that's not the end of the world is it?

Then because I stood my ground I have ended up being punished by not being spoken to and this has gone on for nearly a year now but I feel it's an accidental favour and I'm better off as I'm enjoying the peace and quiet not having to put up with that rubbish!

One thing I have learned is it's not the silly things in themselves that cause the problems no there's always something deeper going on as I feel all that was just done to be spiteful for the fun of it myself due to their own insecurities and if it wasn't the job hunting in itself it would have been something else!

I will do what I feel is the right thing for me as nothing is guaranteed to anyone in this life.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply to

You're exactly right for saying what you did. If your parents and friends don't understand that, it's on them. When the time comes for you to get a new job/career, you'll know it. :-)

β€’ in reply toActivity2004

My friends were absolutely shocked when I told them what I had done that Friday night when I had sworn the way I had done saying I must have been really cross to have done that and how I wouldn't have sworn like that for no reason!

To be fair my friends have been extremely supportive after I was devastated after I had left that job last November.

I am fine about it now and have accepted it and time has helped me come to terms with it.

I would be terrified by Stephen King. I have too much imagination for horror stories! I'm currently reading a Reginald Hill crime novel, "Good Morning, Midnight" . I read it for the first time a few years ago but can't remember the ending. Quite a few of his books were made into the tv series Dalziel and Pascoe.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administratorβ€’ in reply toGhounds

Sounds interesting! Is the show the same as the book?

Ghounds profile image
Ghoundsβ€’ in reply toActivity2004

Not quite, I think the phrase "edited for language" might apply...however the swearing isn't gratuitous and reflects the character and culture Hill is writing about. There are also a fair few literary references but the books are still accessible. The plots are well thought out and I find the characters believable. I have enjoyed detective and mystery fiction since childhood, starting out with the Famous Five and Secret Seven! As an only child I spent hours and hours with my face in a book.

Activity2004 profile image
