Has anyone ever had an issue with low sodium (salt)? I had another seizure on Tuesday whilst on holiday up in Scotland, during my lunch in a cafe. Since then I’ve been sick three times, had heavy fatigue and had no appetite only one sandwich and two eggs on a piece of toast.
I’ve not had one for over a year, but had a concern from my GP over weeks in March time about serious low sodium. Without any thought to it I did decide to run 60 miles over August to raise a thousand pounds for Motor Neurone Disease which caused me to sweat heavily over 10/11 hours. Suspect I didn’t replace my salt sufficiently.
Hasn’t been confirmed it was sodium based yet, but wondered if any one has had any low sodium issue? Is there any sensible practical way to counter it?

Hi DBTI sorry I don’t have an answer but just to say thinking of you. I had tonic clonic seizures when I was younger, pre TBI but know how scary and horrible they are, then frustrating to try and figure it all out. Do you have/know a TBI-savvy physio, they might know re sodium.
Hope you get a solution to get you on the way to feel much better soon.
Thanks Trees, it is the annoyance and frustration as much as the seizure I need to cope with. It would be easier to expect it if it happened once a month, but now I’m awaiting for my driving licence it happens again🤦🏻♂️
Ah no that’s terrible re your driving licence. I feel your pain and frustration. Not knowing when it will happen is very challenging. Just a reminder, if you’re not already doing the other stuff particularly re the seizures but generally TBI too - like keeping hydrated, getting good quality sleep, a balanced healthy diet, managing stress levels, regular gentle exercise, plenty of brain downtime, in addition to trying to figure out the sodium levels.
Are you still under a neurologist? Maybe you can contact their secretary/office. Might be good to get specialist input in addition to GP.
Thanks Trees, not seen a neurologist for years, been after a psychologist for years too, but NHS ones don’t exist in Derbyshire. My GP ain’t the best either. I’ll look after myself though😊
Yeah it’s terrible the postcode disparity with neuropsych. I’m on a seemingly never ending waiting list in Yorkshire but becoming more and more disillusioned with what value they’ll be able to add, as I’ve gone and sought my own solutions so far.
Hi I am prone to having seizures if I become dehydrated which is related to sodium/electrolyte imbalance in the blood. Therefore I am very aware of my fluid intake in warmer weather which I assume will be the same for you and even more important during physical exertion. I am a ex nurse and the importance of fluid balance is a fundamental. So drink plenty! Kate
Thanks Kate, appreciate your feedback. It is a shame you can’t monitor your hydration the same way you can your weight. I have had my GP take some blood from me for tests and look forward to the results this week x
