Hi headway community. I’m coming at this from a place of desperation really…
Has anybody heard of the use of NAC (N-acetylcysteine) to help reduce the effects of TBI?
I have VERY limited knowledge of it and wanted to find out if anyone in this community has any opinions on it… it may be snake-oil thing for all i know… somebody mentioned it in a comment on a post i was reading on social media about brain health.
Thanks

Hi Dann. There's a minefield of questionable and conflicting information online plus warnings of nasty side effects ; also a mention of it being banned ?
Most of the info is beyond my understanding and I suggest you speak with your doctor about it. Hearing of a drug online isn't safe grounds for trusting it. A doctor with pharmacological knowledge, or access to it, can judge whether it would be safe or suitable for any one patient.
thanks Cat, yes i am sensible about what i read online. regarding going to the doctor, i’ve lost all faith in them, as they seem to have minimal understanding of the brain and don’t even listen to me properly. Hence why i’m forced to try and research alternative options online. all very frustrating
Hi Dann, I found this on the web, it seems it's been tried out for all sorts of things that don't really work? Given it has side effects, I'd steer clear personally.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingre...
Remember that a lot of good effects are likely just to be the placebo effect ( it's really hard to find a drug that works better than a placebo..)
On the other hand there has been some research going on for using Ritalin for fatigue,
thanks yes i did a good amount of reading into it too. i was mainly interested to hear if anyone takes it in this community… which looks like nobody at all.
grasping at straws, as these symptoms are so debilitating x
Yes so sorry that things are so rough for you. Tinnitus is bad enough on its own without everything else you're dealing with. What neuro people have you been able to see?
I haven’t tried it. I started researching various supplements over the years since my TBI. If you haven’t already given it a listen the Huberman Lab podcast (it’s also on YouTube) is a great source of info that may be helpful on your road to recovery.
I started a bunch supplements in March when my symptoms came back really bad. I ended up in the ER & they discharged me saying nothing is wrong yet the scan showed an aneurysm. It was hell being back where I was 6 years ago so I was willing to try anything, I bought a bunch of supplements & vitamins on Amazon.
Here I am month later feeling like a new person again! I’m feeling better each month. I stopped all my pain meds and didn’t have any withdrawal symptoms like I did years ago. I think my mood also improved too! The one supplement that I took a short 30 days course of was Resveratol. I think that was my game game changer along with Quercetin, Magnesium, Potassium, B12 & Alpha Lipoic Acid. I’m willing to be my own guinea pig since like you mentioned below doctors hardly have a clue about the brain. 🧠
There’s a man named Brian Johnson that I came across that is spending millions on his ‘Blueprint’ protocol to turn back time on his body. It’s all posted online free and interestingly enough a lot of supplements he is taking was on my list.
Hopefully you find some things that work for you & your specific needs. Not everyone is the same but in general a lot of people with brain injuries are deficient in something. It’s figuring out what it is that’s the issue.
My next test will be doing that mail in blood work to see how all the supplements help! Then maybe trying to kick start my body in losing weight. No matter how much I work out or how healthy I eat since the TBI nothing works.
