Training courses

Hi everyone,

So, we had a meeting yesterday in which we agreed that my partners discharge date will be moved to the 1st June as he is doing so well with intensive rehabilitation. Following this, the aim is for him to come home, provided that he can sit out in the wheelchair for at least 4-5 hours at a time. He is able to do this most of the time but has a wobble around 1-2 times a week, which we are working on!

Whilst we prepare, I am looking for courses on moving and handling people for myself and some family members to ensure we are all able to safely move him in the hoist etc. if necessary. Does anyone know of any charities that offer this, or any companies in the West Midlands that do? Happy to pay if needed but I was told by the OT that some charities offer them and want to be sure.

Thanks!

Hi, the rehab team should provide this type of training as part of the care package. The OT/Physio that arrange for the equipment will make sure you understand how to use it.

If it is delivered from the manufacturer, then the manufacturer should arrange for you to know how it works.

Moving and handling courses, I have never heard of them being offered outside of a service, as the equipment will be specific to the need and environment if used in the community.

Most equipment is relatively simple, but there are safety points to be aware of, but again this is specific to the equipment (what loops to attach, if the base opens for stability, the what ifs, e.g. if something fails)

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for this. They didn’t mention or offer any training-I will be continuing to attend physio sessions to see how to help with this but nothing in the way of care/handling. I have found out this morning that Mencap apparently offer training in first aid/moving and handling people for caters, so will call them shortly and try to book. Thanks!
