Swallowing issue

I drank some tea and swallowed it too quickly and I have this weird feeling in my throat. I can breathe and talk, so I don't think the tea went down the wrong pipe. But I have this uncomfortable sensation in my throat from the rushed swallow. Does anyone know what happened? Will the odd feeling in my throat go away on its own?

Thanks

If it doesn’t go away, see a GP who are open if a bit busy!

If this has happened a few times might be worth seeing SALT (speech and language) with regards swallowing.

Hi liteglimmer. How long ago was your brain injury ? I ask as Dysphagia (problem with swallowing) is quite common after any brain injury.

I was able to eat and drink fairly early on after a bleed on the brain, but would often choke from an involuntary swallowing reflex before I was ready, often causing the food or liquid to enter my windpipe, causing coughing and lack of breath.

I get it rarely now but it's unpleasant at the time.

Or could it have been that your tea was hot and scalded your throat ? How does it feel today ? x

Thanks for your responses! It feels the same today. It's like there's a tightening in my throat. But I can swallow and drink liquids fine. I didn't have an issue in this area before.

I feel if you can swallow and breath ok, and there are no other symptoms, then it's nothing to be concerned about. See how it feels after the weekend and if it's still an issue on Monday, maybe get a tel. appointment with your GP, if only for reassurance.

Meanwhile, try to ignore it and distract yourself ; our throats are often a magnet for stress and tension will only exacerbate the sensation. Take care. x

I had a whiplash and a concussion in January but I also have the Eagle syndrome for which I wait for an operation. The left styloid must be removed. I am not saying you have the same problem but the styloid creates a pressure in the throat and difficulties in swallowing. Somebody associates this syndrome with whiplash: I also had another one many years ago. The problem can be detected by a radiography . It took a lot of time and some chance to discover this problem because doctors underestimate it. If your problem persist, you should consider this possibility too. Clearly, I hope that your problem is only a small accident.Best wishes.

Like with any hot liquid, you may have scolded your throat, these are used to a certain amount of punishment if you think the things we eat and drink. If the sensation is that much of a concern, it lasts for more than a couple of days, swallowing changes, or breathing feels different, it will be worth talking to your GP for reassurance, or if you are in the UK phone 111, or the equivalent if you live elsewhere. Easy to say, difficult to do, try not to worry, or with the power of imagination you will notice anything and everything and it will all feel odd. Take care.

I would suggest speaking to GP and they will make a referral to speech and language (SALT) to assess. SALT may initially be quick to carry out assessment, might be virtual though to have conversation and they may suggest swallowing exercises whilst on waiting list. Be warned SALT having long waiting list for children and adults. But atleast it gets the ball rolling.

Im glad its not having impact on anything, , but it may ease your mind making the steps to get investigated. All the best.

The weird sensation in my throat went away. I'll have to be careful when I drink tea.

I used to have it with certain liquids sticking in my throat and with popcorn and dry foods. It really makes you choke and then burp if it goes wrong way down.

Did you have a tracheotomy for long time?
