We are six months post my husbands surgery for a giant aneurysm which resulted in a stroke. He has been in a rehab unit for 3 weeks and I have been told that the brain damage is pretty much the whole of the right side and that he is suffering from spatial neglect to his left side. From what I understand of this,is that he is not seeing anything on the left, maybe not even his own arm and leg.
His talking is getting better and his personality is there albeit dampened so he does seem to understand that he is not seeing things on the left, but I wondered if anyone had any experience of this and how to cope or overcome it.
Thanks very much and I hope everyone is keeping as well as possible in these strange times

Yep, this is my partner for the left. Between them they make a whole hey!
My partner had it for his right side. He would visually miss things on his right side. We were encouraged to sit at that side when talking to him and do tasks which made him engage to the right. Also as much tactile stimulation with different sensations to his skin, hot, cold, smooth, rough, sharp etc
He’s 2 years along now and yes his spatial awareness is so good I don’t notice anything wrong now. His mobility is great after being hoisted for nearly 4 months. Still do the sensory exercises even if he can’t feel them, just looking at his skin being stimulated with help recovery. We did a 3 mile walk the other day. He isn’t able to use his hand but we are still seeing improvements there too. It will come slowly and surely and don’t listen to the rubbish about the majority of improvements coming in the 1st 3-6 months. In my husbands case this time showed little improvement but he has come so far in the last 6 months particularly with his speech. Good luck and be kind to yourself 😊
