5 wks out of 2wk induced coma, possible anoxia during open heart & fighting histoplasmosis. Minimally conscious. Not enough for drs?

Russ is now nodding yes, giving kisses EVERY time asked and even makes the smacking noise if kisses your cheek, hes starting to initiate kisses, he smiles a lot and consistently when appropriate, he will lift his head for a pillow or help roll when nurses ask him to when time to reposition. He is tracking more with his eyes but still a lot of drugs. He is mouthing words so his trach might be coming out soon!!

He still wont squeeze the drs hand on command which apparently would remove his "vegetative" label. Ugh. This can determine his future care/treatment.

Oh, he has began to attempt to escape his bed the last 3 days too...shows strength and determination but scares me too 😒

All really positive signs. Does Russ have a bed with protective rails to deter him from climbing out ?

Yes. Even upgraded with higher rails so he slid down the bed and got out at the foot. Luckily didnt get hurt

I did the same Cat, those bed rate ls on a normal bed wont deter those able and determin d to get out!!!!

Luckily i was able to be reasoned with at the time and never tried it again, i smacked my face on the floor and sustained a cut on my forehead, then ught id btoken my nose!. I couldnt walk at home he time but I hought id manage.

I couldnt squeeze your he doctors hand either when check ming out of the coma but i could move my tongue to commands. Left or right, this helped prove to doctors i was recovering. My family worked this one out, so stands to reason really if someone has been in a coma, theyre not necessarily able to move limbs afterwards. And left and right can be confusing too, the brain is relearning some things and you cant be sure just what has to be relearned. That comes further down the line when basics have been re- established.

Keep persevering its still early .

Thank you!! Hes done so many things but they act like "squeeze my hand" is the golden ticket. 3 days of coma out he did squeeze my hand on command 3 times.
