PIP refusal.

Hi guys, new to the site so will give everyone a quick update. Was in a coma for 2 weeks for being in a car crash while abroad, had part of my skull removed and have been through all of the main problems that are associated with a brain injury, and still experiencing the majority of them. People told me to apply for P.I.P. which was the first id heard of it, so i did so. Got refused the first time so asked for a mandatory reconsideration, and today have just had another letter stating ive been refused again. Been on a self assessment website which states i should get enhanced daily living-enhanced rate and mobility-standard rate. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and what has been the overall outcome, should i appeal to a tribunal?

Yes, appeal. It is also handy to get someone in the medical field to help with the forms, our mental health nurse was a great help in this way.

i have to take it to the tribunal next, so who would be best to help with that?

Try Citizens Advice. If they can't do it, they will tell you who can.

The thing with these benefits is it is all in the form filling. I do not get PIP and have never applied for it because although I was 3 weeks in a coma and had to be taught to walk etc again my recovery has meant I would not qualify as I can walk a fair distance and do not need assistance with day to day living.

You have to be so careful where it says can you do something repeatedly you must say no. I can walk upstairs, i.e. One flight but not repeatedly.

I was initially refused ESA but had it overturned on appeal, my second round of forms was very different from the first.

Not sure about the pip appeal process. Ring headway for advice on who can help.

Hi Davie, get as much help as you can . The benefits and work website is very good, also citizen's advice . I also think you can sometimes get advocates who work for your council. You have to fight very hard these days and it is all about the wording . Keep fighting and get as much support, help and evidence as you can . All the best :)

Hi. Scared about getting pip form, I'm on indefinite DlA and it will get turned to pip eventually. I could do with advice as I have a mental illness and disability issues. Where is the best place to get help. I think cab help or welfare rights. But to get a support letter from your GP will help.

To give you some kind of estimate of the work required to fill in the forms:

Whilst it would have been a good indication of my abilities and problems, I couldn't have couldn't have completed the form coherently enough to put my case forward, so my wife entered the details for me.

She typed all the responses to the PIP form questions in Word first. This allowed her to revisit the answers each time she remembered something that was useful / relevant. When she was ready she hand wrote them back onto the form and added extra sheets

When she worked out how much supporting text she had provided, she had written over 5,000 words!

This is obviously way beyond the capabilities of a lot of the most needy people whom the support is required for. Which is why going to get additional help is so vital to getting an accurate presentation of your case.

So, it is well worth seeking professional help and pushing as far as you can go. For many people on here over the years, getting their entitlement becomes a quest and something to focus upon and brings up that "I won't be beaten by the system" feeling which isn't a bad thing.

BTW, it took me 35 minutes to type this small bit of text :-(

Hi there having recently had to apply for PIP for my dad - the form itself is so confusing and wordy- I got help from my local headway I jotted down what I would write and the lady at headway kindly edited or changed the phrasing of some of my answers as she knows the points system - and what word would get a point and what wouldn't for instance on a lot of them I was saying sometimes needs help with ----she said take out sometimes otherwise you won't get that point.

It's quite pathetic really but brain injury is so unseen unless your either a sufferer or close relative

Good luck keep fighting for what your entitled too

As above, PIP is about the words in the reply that get points. I got 0 points tge my husband and GP wrote letters but my husband letter replied with his take on each question as to how much he had to do for me.... as for CAB said they would help me re social work and other things have now realised been 4 months not heard anything. .. just remember I asked them for help. Hey ho.... Welcome to our world xx

Just keep pressing on

That's rotten.

I get some DLA, it is not much, but which I figure covers me for the taxis I have to get, sometimes, if I need to get somewhere, sharpish, and Mr Flump can't take us. I use the train and/or bus, most of the time, but sometimes I splash out my DLA on a taxi, if I need it. I am planning to ring up this week, to see if I am entitled to and PIP.

Now, I assume they won't give me it - I mean, I work, so I don't *need* the money. But it sounds like your situation is completely different. I'd definitely appeal, and ask them *why* you aren't entitled.
