Headbanging!!!

Mikesghost profile image
102 Replies

As a young man I was a devoted heavy metal fan and of course a head banger. I often wondered if this activity contributed to my later development of a brain tumour. I still love metal but no longer bang my head like a maniac :) I found this article about a fan who was left with a blood clot on his brain after a Motorhead concert and thought others would find it interesting: loudwire.com/motorhead-fan-...

WOW YOU CAN READ MY MIND. I'VE JUST BEEN WATCHING DOWNLOAD ON THE TELLY. NOTHING LIKE RIP YOUR FACE OFF METAL ON A SUNDAY MORNING!

THIS YEAR IS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY FIRST DONINGTON, AEROSMITH HEADLINED THAT DAY & LO & BEHOLD THEY WERE HEADLINING THIS YEAR. THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME EH. TO BARON C, SORRY I DIDN'T RECOGNISE STEVEN TYLER, IT IS 18 YRS SINCE I LAST SAW THEM..

I HAVE ALL MY TICKETS FRAMED ON THE WALL,GOD I SAW SOME STUFF.

IF I COULD STILL HEADBANG I WOULD HAVE BEEN BOUNCING ROUND THE LOUNGE. I DO WONDER TOO WHETHER MY HEADBANGING DAYS STARTED THE CHAIN OF EVENTS THAT LED TO THE HAEMORRHAGE. I DID GO FOR IT A BIT. WHO KNOWS. IF IT DID AT LEAST I WAS DOING SOMETHING I LOVE WHEN IT EXPLODED. IT'S SO HARD TO KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL SO I DO IT WITH MY FEET NOW !

I SAW MOTORHEAD AT A FESTIVAL IN GUILDFORD OF ALL PLACES & SAW LEMMY AT GATWICK AIRPORT. HE'S ALOT SMALLER THAN YOU THINK!

She introduced me to the Rock and Blues, which is also a bike fest.

It's cool at the R&B. Timeless!!!

THA'S WHAT I LOVED ABOUT GIGS & FESTIVALS, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (HA HA) FOR THOSE HOURS OR DAYS, EVERYONE'S THERE SHARING WHAT YOU LOVE WITHOUT FEAR OR JUDGMENT OR CRITICISM. I REALLY MISS THAT.

I HAD A FEW BIKER FRIENDS BUT ONLY FLIRTED WITH BIKE EVENTS, WAS FUN THOUGH.

Confession time.

I was a bike rally "virgin" until 2005 when my partner took me to the Rock and Blues. I couldn't see straight with pain and still on two elbow crutches. When we arrived on the Friday afternoon and staggered down to the arena, we sat on a grassy bank above a dip where all the dazzling show wining chops and trikes were coming away from the awards ceremony. It was baking hot heat and my broken body was soaking it up. Sat around us were guys with back patches from all over the world. Everyone just chilling

The sound of a Hendrix track was drifting across from the stage on a breeze.

It was heaven. I felt at home.

Could have been any era, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. It didn't matter.

Because right there and then, time stood still and nothing in the world mattered.

Perfect.

Part of me is there right now, forever marked in time.

It's great to see so many rock fans on here reminiscing. I have been to too few gigs since my op but can confirm I had a great time without headbanging!! ;)

I'VE JUST NOTICED THAT THE THEME TUNE FOR THE BRITISH F1 GRAND PRIX HIGHLIGHTS IS BLACK SABBATH. FUNNY HOW, WHEN 90% PEOPLE CLAIM METAL IS THE DEVIL.S SOUND, IT SUDDENLY BECOMES COOL WHEN THERE'S ANYTHING TO DO WITH FAST CARS, FAST BIKES & ANYTHING ELSE THAT GOES FAST .....

I LOVE FAST CARS & METAL SO I'M IN NIRVANA (AGAIN NO PUN INTEDED THAT CAME OUT SUBCONSCIOUSLY)

I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY WOMEN AREN'T SUPPOSED TO LIKE "THAT SORT OF THING" WHY?????????

WE'RE NOT THAT FAR FROM BRANDS HATCH SO MAYBE MY OTHER HALF (WHO'S ALWAYS BEEN A COMPLETE PETROL HEAD) COULD ORGANISE IT AS A VERY EARLY BIRTHDAY PRESSIE. B'DAY IS IN DECEMBER BUT WEATHER'S RUBBISH THEN.

Just gave my son his 18th Birthday present two weeks ago.

He doesn't know the full details yet but we have got him a days track time with 3 laps in each of four very special supercars at the Pro-Drive test track in Warwickshire. First of all in a Ferrari, then a Lambo Murcielago, then a new Audi R8 and finally the brand new Nissan GTR !

Then when he thinks its all over he's got a further 3 laps in one of those cars FLAT OUT with a pro race driver in the driving seat.

He will love it !!

We live near Silverstone and Santa Pod, oh and Mallory and Donnington ;) Lol lol

Sorry to tease !

Been to Brands a few times and its a great track.

Cadwell is my favourite though.

in reply tohayabusa

NO WAY!!!!! MURCIELAGO????? AUDI R8???? FERRARI (HOPEFULLY NOT AN F1 VERSION AFTER THE BRITISH GRAND PRIX)??? I COULD THROW A JEALOUS FIT RIGHT HERE & NOW!!

ADD IN AN MP4 12C, A KOENIGSEGG AGERA & THE TOYOTA HYBRID LE MANS CAR & I'D COMBUST!

WHAT A WONDERFUL PRESENT & WHAT A LUCKY BOY.

PLEASE DON'T TELLME YOU WENT TO THE GRAND PRIX AS ARE NEAR SILVERSTONE??

hayabusa profile image

I was given a TVR Cerbera V8 lightweight sport by a Silverstone TVR dealer to play with for a day.

190mph top speed and 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. Almost Hayabusa speed, but not quite.

Mind blowing speed and direct stearing ie: No free play in the stearing wheel.

A 200mph go-kart.

Had a play in a few fast cars and I've had a few tasty and rapid BMWs before my world fell apart.

But nothing is forever.

My body and head couldnt take it now.

in reply tohayabusa

WHAT A TOY TO BE GIVEN TO PLAY WITH. DID YOU ACTUALLY DRIVE THE SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT?

HOW I WISH I COULD STILL DRIVE. HOWEVER I DON'T THINK I'D EVER HAVE BEED GOOD ENOUGH TO DRIVE A CAR LIKE THAT PROPERLY

hayabusa profile image
hayabusa in reply to

Not the track itself, but the dealer was located there.

It was the most ergonomically perfect car for me. The two huge carbon fibre bike exhausts out the back sounded beautiful.

No keys, no locks, no door handles. Just wow! Not for the timid or faint of heart.

The huge V8 grumble at low rpm, turned into a high pitched banshee howl when you really kicked it.

Laughed all day

Not many cars or bikes make you feel like that.

in reply tohayabusa

IF ONLY WE STILL HAD V8, & MORE F1 CARS. THESE NEW ONES SOUND FEEBLE IN COMPARISON. WHERE'S THE RUMBLE & SCREAM GONE??

hayabusa profile image
hayabusa in reply to

The answer is emission controls.

Still a few V8s and V12s out there.

I'd still love a Bentley Conti GT.

in reply tohayabusa

Not much hope for a Kawasaki KH750 two-stroke triple on that front then, clouds of blue smoke when you opened them up, and that narrow, vicious two stroke power band... Oh, and Castrol 'R' in two strokes - oh that smell! takes me back ;-)

55 is not old at all, Debbie Harry played glastonbury this year and she's 70!! Dolly Parton was amazing and 68! I'm 51 and don't feel old at all :D

in reply toMikesghost

I cannot believe Debbie Harry is 70! I remember Blondie at their peak when I was at uni a million years ago.

in reply tohayabusa

Yes, insurance companies hated them. Very embarrassing if they hit the power band mid-bend - lots of respect needed. When I graduated to Suzy GS750 then Honda CB900FA I had a favourite Hadleigh Custom Tee Shirt "Help stamp out two strokes"

The 900FA was very tame by todays standards, I don't think I'd last long on current "Crotch Rockets". Think I'd be a Harley D rider (old Dev's been watching too much Sons of Anarchy again...)

Saw Motorhead at local Polytechnic before they were famous, SU entertainments guy didn't advertise for fear of sell-out. As it happened, it was such a well kept secret that about 8-10 students turned up. They said something about NEVER!, EVER!, EVER!!! Going to play there again :-)

They've got a current tv advert for some fashion label thing and using a Black Sab track. I'm trying to remember what the ad is.....

in reply tohayabusa

PLEASE REMEMBER I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT.

I HATE IT WHEN FASHION THINKS IT'S TRENDY TO MIMIC STUFF LIKE METAL CULTURE.

I WAS READING THE DAILY TELEGRAPH FASHION MAG THIS MORNING & THEY'VE DONE A SPREAD CALLED "COME AS YOU ARE" YOU CAN BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR MOST READERS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF NIRVANA.

THE STUPID MODELS - WOMEN, WHICH MAKES IT WORSE EVEN THOUGH I AM FEMALE, ARE WEARING £200 CHECK SHIRTS & £1000 BIKER JACKETS TO TRY & LOOK HARD.

MY LEATHER JACKET WAS BOUGHT FOR £50 AT KENSINGTON MARKET IN LONDON & HAS BEEN THROUGH 84 GIGS & 20 FESTIVALS IN 2 COUNTRIES. IT BEARS THE SCARS TO PROVE IT. THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE FOR, NOT FOR SOME PONCEY MODEL TO STRUT AROUND IN TRYING TO LOOK TOUGH.

IT REALLY ANNOYS ME. RANT OVER.

Mikesghost profile image

I totally agree!!

hayabusa profile image
hayabusa in reply to

High fashon gets involved = kiss of death !!!

Trendy people are buying £500 or £600 Alpinestars or Dainese leather race bike jackets just for fashion wear.

I have some very expensive gear, but its about safety.

My Nankai leather race gloves cost over £200, but didn't bust one stitch in my bike smash.

The Knox Spine protector £130 saved my spine from being totally wrecked.

My Arai Race Rep helmet took a few smacks but held ! A £600 lid.

The Sidi Vertebrae race boots held together well. £250

in reply tohayabusa

IT'S SO WORTH SPENDING ON THE BEST POSSIBLE SAFETY KIT, IT'S NOT A POSE, IT'S A NECESSITY. IT'S THE" ALL THE GEAR & NO IDEA" PEOPLE I CAN'T STAND.

MY HALF USED TO HAVE AN ULTIMA & HE PUT MASSIVELY EXPENSIVE 5 POINT HARNESSES IN IT , ANYTHING CHEAPER JUST WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SAFE ENOUGH FOR DRIVING A CAR LIKE THAT.

PEOPLE THOUGHT THE WHOLE THING WAS JUST FOR SHOWING OFF BUT IT'S HIS PASSION & HE KNOWS AT HE'S DOING. PLUS IT WAS GREAT FUN FOR ME TO BE DRIVEN AROUND IN. SADLY HE GOT FED UP WITH IT & CHANGED IT FOR A 1967 MUSTANG IMPORTED FROM CALIFORNIA. NO WHERE NEAR AS NICE AS THE ULTIMA.

hayabusa profile image
hayabusa in reply to

Ultima made the fastest car around the Nurbergring using a Hayabusa engine recently until the next fastest record holder came along.

The Westfield mega-busa is equally potent.

Lol at "all the gear no idea". Classic phrase!

Just like "all show and no go" ;-)

My last Hayabusa was my final fast bike. I put a Dutch supercharger on it and slammed and stretched it. Had the same power output as a MOTOGP bike but on the road.

A standard Busa is fast enough for most.

Take a look?

Top speed in 1st gear = 80mph.

Top speed in 2nd gear = 120mph.

Then another 4 gears to go.

Nice bikes, I've had 5 Busa's now. But no more.

in reply tohayabusa

LOVE IT! IT FRIGHTENS ME TO DEATH WHEN I WATCH MOTOGP HOW DO THEY DO THAT?? I REALLY LOVED THA ULTIMA, THE MUSTANG WAS A REAL COME DOWN FOR ME SPOILT BRAT THAT I AM!

in reply tohayabusa

CERTAINLY WILL. THERE'S NOT AS MUCH CAR ACTION AT THE MOMENT. HOWEVER THERE IS RZR BUGGY RACING ON AT 4.10 AM, WHATEVER THAT IS,SO IF I'M UP THEN I'LL GIVE THAT A GO (UNLIKELY)

IT WAS A 1967 FASTBACK, WHICH HE RESTORED, LEFT HAND DRIVE OF COURSE WITH THE ORIGINAL CALIFORNIA NUMBER PLATE BUT SMELT OF PETROL INSIDE & MADE ME FEEL SICK! HE SAID IT WAS A PIG TO DRIVE IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER! .

SADLY SOMEONE DROVE INTO IT & TOOK THE BONNET OFF, HE WAS NOT AMUSED.

NOW HE'S MOVED ON TO A 1970 LOTUS ELAN PLUS 2. IT'S TAKEN HIM 2 YRS TO RESTORE IT BUT IT DONE. I LIKE THIS ONE!

CAN'T WAIT TILL THE NEXT ONE. I'M DETERMINED TO GET MY MCLAREN!

I remember going to gigs in the late seventies and early eighties when a female was a rare sight but in 2007 I went to see Motorhead in Glasgow and the crowd must have been 30% female. Mallory is great, so many world champion car and bike racers came through that track.

The Foo's are excellent. Can't quite get my head around SOAD though? My partner likes them.

My darker taste in rock is The Rollins Band and I've got some Rammstein and others.

I saw the Quo in 1975 at Theatre 1 in Cov when I was 15. Our music teacher took a load of us in the school minibus. I couldnt hear for 2 days.

Then as a birthday present I got taken to Wickstead Park to see the Quo again 30 years later !!!

Outdoor concert, warm summers night, full moon and I felt like a kid again.

The Quo are talking about getting the original band members back together, that would be cool.
