Fine Needle Aspiration of groin lymph nodes with Ultrasound

Hi, has anybody had one of these? My MRI after the failed hysteroscopy showed enlarged lymph nodes in my groin, so my gynae wants to do the above test. I have this on Wednesday at 1.30pm and i'm worrying myself silly as to what they're going to find. The doctor did say they confirmed the endometrial thickening and fluid with the MRI, but he wanted to investigate the lymph nodes as soon as possible. Does FNA hurt? I'm assuming they will give me a local, but i didn't receive any info with my appointment letter, so i'm not sure what to expect. Thank you x

I had this to decide whether it was infection or malignancy in the node. Don't worry it won't hurt.

They will find the node on the ultrasound then numb the area with local anaesthetic and inject the needle and remove some cells for biopsy. It's painless but you will just feel some movement,I wouldn't even describe it as uncomfortable. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Debs,

Thank you for your message. We're sorry to hear that you've been having a worrying time. It's reassuring to hear that you have a thorough gynae team looking after you, and that they want to check out those enlarged lymph nodes. Ok, so your question about what an FNA feels like: you may be offered a local, but essentially an FNA is a needle going through the skin into the lymph node and removing a small fluid sample. This is pretty much the same sensation and having a local anyway. So, you may choose to not have the anaesthetic.

If you'd like to talk a bit more or get in touch after the FNA then we're on 0808 802 0019 or nurse@eveappeal.org.uk

Best Wishes,

Team Eve

Thank you for your responses, I feel a little more at ease now. I have a number of tattoos so I'm not afraid of the needle, I was more bothered about the biopsy part. You've set my mind at rest a bit x

Well, the radiologist doing the FNA didn't actually take any samples as the nodes appeared to be OK on the scan. The right one was 7.3mm and the left 6.2mm and visually nothing showed up that looked like it needed further investigation. I guess that's good news! Yay! Back to the gynaecologist now to see what the plan is for the symptoms I have and see what treatment i'm going to get.

On another note, i'm going to ask for my doctor for copies of all my tests and records and ask to see an endo. I need more answers about my hypothyroid and Factor V Leiden issues, and I would like to come off the Fluoxetine as this is probably making things more complicated than needs be. Wouldn't it be nice to be normal? Haha :)
