Bleeding at age 58.

I had a Mirena coil fitted almost 7 years ago because of heavy periods. I'd tried endometrial ablation but it didn't work. I don't know when I went through the menopause as the coil

Stopped my periods after a year of constant spotting. 4 weeks ago a had what seemed like a period and lasted for 5 days. I had cramps etc. Waited 3 weeks to see a GP who referred me to a Rapid Acceas Clinic as a patient suspected of having cancer. Appointment is on the 17th Feb.

Can anyone tell

Me what to expect? What else could it be other than cancer? Anyone else had this and what was it?

Hi there,

So sorry to hear you are having a worrying time. To reassure you, you have a good GP, they are following guidelines for unexpected bleeding which is why you have come through a rapid access clinic.

What to expect? Well, they are likely to do an ultrasound scan of your womb - this is best done as an internal scan with a probe that is gently put into your vagina – it doesn’t hurt. They may offer to take a sample of your womb lining. This is similar to the position and instruments used for when you have a smear. The difference is they put a small straw-like instrument into your womb to sample some tissue.

It usually takes a couple of weeks to get the results from that.

This may not be a cancer at all, but its important to check.

Thank you very much for this informative reply. I'm hoping the bleeding has something to do with me still having the Mirena coil in after almost 7 years. I had a smear 18 months ago and was advised at that time that as I didn't need the Mirena for contraceptive purposes there was no need to remove it as it wasn't causing me any problems. Time will tell.

Hi justjools21 I am in a similiar situation, mirena coil 4 years and bleeding with associated cramps ( but it was brown spotting)after a long time with out . I still have the cramps and the bloating and so found your post on the NHS website. I too have been to my GP last week and have been refered in the 2 wk rule for an ultrasound. I don't have an appointment yet so I am sitting here wondering and worrying as well. I assume that I have to have ultrasound done before they do any of the other stuff.

I had a period for a week after not having one for 18months. Had the cancer referral too and a long wait over Xmas and new year for results of the hystoscopy and biopsy. Despite a thick womb lining of 10mm the tests came back ok and they said it was hormonal changes. I am 54

Thank you Marigold and Katherine. I feeling very nervous now the appointment is drawing near. The last time I had a biopsy it couldn't be done while is was conscious so had to go in a week later for a general anaesthetic. I'm really concerned about that as well as the possible outcome. I was hoping I'd find out on Friday at my appointment but maybe it will be like yours Katherine.

I'll certainly report back on here as to how I get on. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one going through this and that others have had a good outcome.

Marigold I really hope it was good news for you. I had my appointment and the scan. Also had the Mirena removed. Thankfully there were no abnormalities found. I apparently have a 'bulky uterus' but am healthy. I really think it was a period I had as it was bright red blood and lasted for a week. I have since had another one but am no longer concerned about it. Thanks MArigold for your support.

I have had that exact experience you had, I’m 56.... can you tell me what the answer/outcome was. I’m afraid it may be cancer. Waiting to go to gyno appointmnt
