Morning,

I was wondering if Alcohol makes our bodies react in a different way if we have Grave's and our Thyroids been ablated I was curious if anyone noticed.. It seems like when I have a bunch of drinks on the weekends the next week seems to be rough on me like it makes my nervousness extra high for days after I have consumed it... I was wondering if it like knocks our levels out of whack as well...

Many with low thyroid levels report low alcohol intolerance.

I have a family member who had a thyroidectomy years ago and found anything more than an occasional drink impossible ever since.

Do you have any current blood test results? TSH, FT4, FT3?

You may need higher replacement dose.

You may get more replies if you post on the main thyroid forum.

Yeah that's the weird thing! I have been feeling good and then when I drink while I was away on a trip like 3 days straight I was feeling bad 2 days later and been since!

Hello Shaf :

I've had RAI thyroid ablation for Graves and now manage lingering Graves, thyroid eye disease caused by the RAI nd hypothyroidism.

I don't drink any longer, and when I try I'm less than a light weight now.

Please post on the main Thyroid UK forum if you want others to see this post as we, are all, over there.

PennyAnnie:

Do you still deal with many symptoms on a daily basis? even after the RAI and on replacement hormone?

Yes - when you feel well, the ' old you' shines through, you go into overdrive to do the stuff you could not previously face - and then you get payback and become exhausted for a couple more days afterwards.

Also by not doing the things that need to be done can play on your mind as normally you would have actioned everything in double quick time and so here again in creeps the upset at not being that highly efficient person you believe you once were.

It's all about pacing oneself and likely being accepting that you are not where you were before diagnosed with Graves Disease and that is where I found great insight in Elaine Moore's research and understanding of Graves.

Mind you I'm almost double your age - so just writing from my standpoint.

Since a thyroidectomy and RAI many years ago, alcohol has a very bad effect on me. I feel unwell for some time after any alcohol. It is a very unpleasant feeling and after two or three attempts, I decided to avoid all alcohol. Have not found a solution other than avoidance unfortunately. However a good replacement dose improves other problems overall, and T3 included is important. Good luck.
