I have hashimotos and take throxine and it helps a bit. There is no real alternative in the uk but remember Hashimotos is a problem with both your T3 and your T4 and thyroxine is T4 so it helps but not completely. You might find this useful info

I have been diagnosed with Coeliac for 27 years and two years ago started taking thyroxine. I wanted to know a little more about it and my cousin lent me a book called "Why do I still have thyroid symptoms when my lab tests are normal" by Datis Kharrazian. It is quite in depth but I found it helpful. There are so many references to Coeliac in it too.

Hi john.

I have hashimotos thyroid problem,( take 125mcg levo daily) haven't been diagnosed CD but have symptoms of it plus DH symptoms I had the tests but think that I don't eat enough gluten for it to show up and am not doing the gluten challenge..

Hashimotos CD and DH are all autoimmune diseases, and there is a link between all of them.(try and get a doctor to tell you that)

I feel better not eating gluten/cereal foods,Gluten affects the absorption of levo as do iron treatments vitamin supps, caffine to name a few plus the DH rash on my face disappears,.Its just going now after forgetting to pack my gf bread in spain last week.

The book above is very good as is the thyroid website in the communities above. This site can educate on 'other options' as you work through your thyroid issues. It isn't as easy as taking a pill, as with CD isn't about giving up cereal.

Its not that once you start levo you can't stop its a thing that it will keep you heathly as with CD sufferes not eating gluten/cereal products.

Hope this gives you some help

John discuss your concerns with your Dr. A good endochrinologist will be able to explain what level you are on and why you need to take it and how to monitor you.

Thyroxine is a hormone that your body would normally produce and affects the metabolism of every function in your body. If your body doesn't produce enough then you need to supplement it by taking it. it is a life long thing in the same way being gluten free is lifelong for a coeliac. You perhaps need to talk to your doctor and ask for more explanation. I'm on it and now that my body is fairly well stabilised i just get a check up blood test yearly unless I feel some of my symptoms returning.
