Hi everyone, just to say I was in Wetherspoons for lunch the other day and they have a gluten free menu. It was great to be able to choose without looking for stars or GFS. The only disappointment was no chips. How hard is it to have a dedicated fryer? I have sent an email to them hopefully they'll listen.

It may not be the fryer, but the type of frozen raw product they use. The chips are not always glutenfree as they can be coated with wheat flour to stop them sticking together. The ones I buy state one of ingredients as maize flour which is glutenfree.

Hopefully another cafe chain will take up the opportunity. I believe McDonalds have GF chips, but they don't have the same pizazz as Wetherspoons!

Yes, apparently it's that the weather's Poona chips are coated in flour to stop them from sticking.

I've asked that question before, and the server looked at me like I was insane for checking whether chips were gluten free!

Great you have somewhere to eat, be careful as most places have gf menus but cross contamination is still very high... i choose not to eat out any longer after being glutenised twice this year, both by restaurants with gf menus but sadly by my food being cross contaminated by preparation etc-its hard to put our trust in someone else. -yes as honjen said be careful with chips as most places use frozen ones with coating on. Good Luck 🎄⛄

If you do your research, you might find places that can be trusted... We've found a head chef whose wife has coeliac disease, so his kitchen is very clued up. There are also a few entirely gluten free places, and one place that has a dedicated GF area in the kitchen.

I regularly eat steaks in Wetherspoons and always substitute the chips for a jacket potato, also many of the curry's are gluten free, if you state that you want the gluten free option, they will leave off the naan breads and give you extra poppadoms which the ones they use are gluten free

Wetherspoons is like an oasis for GF. They also have GF Beer! Estrella Galicia Gluten Free. Not bad but would love a pint of Walkers. In Spain there are at least six diffrent GF beers available in the average supermarket.

Be careful, the "vinegar" might not be acetic acid but caramel mixed with non-brewed condiment.

And I watched in a restaurant ordinary veg being cooked in the same water as pasta.
