Hi Junny123

Gluten can often be the cause of IBS. In fact here is what Coeliac UK say about it:

“Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common misdiagnosis in people later diagnosed with coeliac disease. One in four people with coeliac disease have previously been treated for IBS.”

If you are concerned, please seek medical advice BEFORE considering removing gluten from your diet. For most people it is usually a blood test that screens for Coeliac Disease. However it will only work if you are eating gluten because it measures antibodies to gluten.

I hope this helps.

Hi, I have coeliac disease, so I’m gluten and dairy free, I was getting very bad pains still with certain foods I was eating, and flare ups. After a blood and stool test to rule out anything nasty, I was told I have ibs to… Which I find I have to limit my food even more..

Gluten has everything to do with IBS. In fact, I stay away from all grains, soy, and anything with yeast.

Yes. Gluten grains can be inflammation causing in the gut, so while not a cause of IBD (crohns/colitis), can exasperate symptoms in some.

From what I’ve read dairy protein can be as much of a problem for IBD people.

All comes down to inflammation in the gut (something like 80% of the immune system is behind the single cell gut wall), whether IBD, IBS, coeliac disease, non-coeliac gluten/wheat sensitivity, and or allergies to foods.

Gluten allergy aka celiac and IBS are different diseases with many of the same symptoms. Celiac is a condition that is considered an auto immune, where the body reacts to gluten by attacking the small intestine. To have celiac, you must have the genetic markers for it. IBS or IBD is a different condition that is not strictly related to a gluten allergy. However, carbs of any kind, not just gluten, can cause inflammation in the body which can aggravate all kinds of conditions. There are many people who find that avoiding carbs including gluten feel much better. If you have GI symptoms, you should have a doctor diagnosis what you have so you can tailor your diet to help heal and improve your gut.

Yes, for sure. I have coeliac, was gluten-free, then got lots of GI tract inflammation for a few years and told it was everything under the sun. Came to realise it was foods that are labelled GF but with gluten in them that were making me ill, as well as one's that claim to be on safe production lines. Removed all remaining processed foods, GI tract inflammation went.I think I'd say for anyone with any gut or bowel inflammation and issues, to first get checked for coeliac (properly, not just the faffing blood test that returns more false negatives than proper positives - gut biopsy should always be gold standard), before cutting out gluten, and then if clear of coeliac, still cut out gluten. Our bodies just do not seem to like it once there is an inflammation issue of any sort. Gluten is a lectin, and apparently all lectin-high foods may be an issue for anyone with gut or inflammation also, so worth checking out low lectin foods. Gastro doctor told me to look at fodmap diet also, but didn't match up to foods that caused issues. I think gluten is a good starting point.
