Wine gums

I had 2 Maynards Wine-gums today and very quickly felt sick and had a tummy ache. The wrapping included YEAST in the ingredients. Does this have gluten in it ? Has anyone else had this problem ?

Hi bones-bones, I just looked up Maynard's wine gums but can't see yeast listed as an ingredient. Yeast does not usually contain gluten on its own, but tends to be found in an environment where flour is around, so possible cross contamination is very likely. It does however contain starch, but no indication of the type of starch. If gluten is your issue, this could be the culprit.

Sorry my (my husband’s) mistake ! I should have put starch not yeast .

Thank you for your reply. You were right. It wasn’t yeast it was starch .

Yes, I think they may use flour to stop them sticking. Hidden flour is a real pain. I had one American style wine gum years ago with real bad side effects so I'm very wary nowadays .

As above…it should have been starch. Wheat starch I guess…though they don’t say. W Gs donated to husband !

They should be made to specify the origin of the starch, but it is possible that they use different ones depending on cost and availability, so they don't specify because it would be more expensive to have different versions of the same label.

Hi.I looked at the label info on tesco dot com, and under allergen info. it says “May contain wheat”. So a no no for Coeliacs and Wheat allergic.

Thank you research fan. I’m lactose free now too . I don’t eat much meat and Idon’t really like vegetables so I’ll have to stick to fish and fruit.

Sorry to hear you’ve been ill.

That’s a good perspective. When I was pretty unwell after finally finding coeliac disease (joints, muscles, glands up, fatigue. It was the start of COVID as well, I thought of Ethiopia as they were at war. I had worked there. I

Similar to other comments, I can't see yeast in the ingredients of Maynard wine gums. Is this the standard wine gums or a sub-brand? Yeast tends to be an issue if it is yeast extract which comes from by product of brewing (barley based generally). Normal bakers yeast is ok to my knowledge. In looking at the ingredients I can see they contain 'starch' of unspecified origin, so that could be wheat starch. Also they contain glucose which can be wheat derived and an issue for those who are very sensitive to gluten. I have googled the product also for gluten and any search returns indicate it is not safe for coeliac. They only real way to know is to contact the company directly and ask them about the ingredients and gluten. Not nice to be made ill, so commiseration and speedy recovery.

They do have a warning saying may contain wheat. I made the same mistake once. Nothing in the ingredients then noticed the warning later 😜. There are gf ones out there just not Maynards 😊
