Any advice?

Evening all,

I’m new this group as I am awaiting tests to see if I’m celiac. I have a thyroid condition so my doctor thinks I could be allergic to gluten. When I eat bread I get severe stomach cramping with bloating. I feel tired all the time and can’t poo some days then other days I can. Also get some lower back pain. Does this sound like celiac ?

Yea those are celiac symptoms. Do you ever get canker sores or mysterious rashes? Teeth problems? Any mysterious symptoms you can think of?

No Iv been lucky not to get any of those mentioned. It’s mainly constipation, tiredness, sluggish after meals, back pain, bloating, indigestion, and stomach pain. I thought it could be ibs. But because I have over active thyroid my doc wants to test me for celiac. I hope it is that so I can feel better and put my mind at ease.

The range of symptoms for coeliac are wide and some entirely unrelated to digestive symptoms (e.g. nerve pain in hands/feet, joint pain, skin conditions).

The only way to know definitely is to have the test. Be careful with GP testing for coeliac as they are notoriously badly informed, and even if blood test comes back negative, there are additional tests that need to happen if you have coeliac symptoms.

You also need to keep gluten in your diet until all tests are complete.

Additionally, coeliac is not an 'allergy', it is an autoimmune condition that effects the body in many different ways.

Some people are allergic to wheat but don't have coelaic, and some have non-coeliac gluten intolerance which may have a lot of the symptoms of coeliac.

It's good your doctor suggesting tests, but just be very aware of them being fully informed on the testing and make sure it's done properly.
