Does anyone else have depression and anxiety since being diagnosed with celiacs?

Has your vitamin B12 and folate been tested recently.

Gluten and dairy can cause issues with the gut that can lead to a B12 deficiency. This can cause neurological damage which has depression and anxiety as symptoms.

Yes I have had every test and it always comes back normal.

Yes before and after diagnosis. Now I'm dealing with it because of seriously dodgy gut in peri-menopause! Always to do with the state of the gut. Zero sugar helps but I'm finding it almost impossible to keep away from chocolate!

I agree, celiacs is hard enough to deal with but when you throw in menopause also, it really is hard.

Yes I also has depression and anxiety after going on gluten free diet for Celiac. I eventually went to GP and got antidepressants. I feel so much better . I think it’s caused by the gut not making enough serotonin which gives you the feel good factor . But I’m not an expert just know it worked for me. Hope you feel better soon.

What antidepressant are you on? I was given Lexapro. I think it may need changing because it doesn't seem to we working any longer. Thank for the reply.

Hi

Being diagnosed with Coeliac disease can come as a big shock. Even if it’s a relief to have a diagnosis, having to suddenly change what you can eat can be really stressful.

I think it’s fairly common to feel depressed and anxious about this huge change in your life, especially after you are first diagnosed. Making sure to avoid gluten can still make me anxious after many years.

I found that the best thing to help me was to become as informed as possible about what I could or couldn’t eat. I bought a cookery book to help, but there are lots of recipes on the net. I found an internet site which sold things like different varieties of gluten free flour, oats etc. I used google to find places that I could eat out. I take snacks with me on days out to make sure I’m not left hungry. Hopefully your family and friends understand your needs.

Perhaps your depression and anxiety are linked to other health issues, but I think the psychological impact of Coeliac disease is often underrated.

Good luck with getting yourself well again.
