Hi all, just had positive blood test for Gluten Reaction which is probably manifesting in the rashes I get on arms buttocks and knees. Can anyone help me get to lists of what to buy and what not to buy from the supermarkets ??

Free Lists of GF foods and foods that Contain it ??
Hi,
All plain fruit and veg are safe/gluten free.
Rice is fine as long as you rinse it before cooking. For micro rice, Tilda is good at labelling which flavours are gluten free.
All plain joints of meats and fish are fine. Watch out for any coatings or sauces though!
Be alert in the 'Free from' isle - as not everything has to be free from gluten to qualify being there.
Crisps: Seabrooks, Pom bears and some of the Tyrell flavours are gluten free.
Cheese and most plain yogurts are mostly fine - check the labelling.
Morrisons have started doing gluten free oven chips. Most supermarkets offer frozen gluten free pizzas etc.
Gluten free pasta is so easy to get your hands on. Most are pretty good. I would advise only cooking the quantity you immediately need - as I've never really enjoyed the cold leftovers (it is chewy and breaks apart more easily).
Chuck out your toaster and buy a new one. No matter how much you try to clean it up, your old one will never become completely gluten free. Same goes for sieves, wooden spoons and colanders (also applies to pasta machines and bread makers!).
Most supermarkets have an online gluten free list. Your local Coeliac group should also be able to help. Coeliac UK have a food directory available to their members.
Good luck making the switch to gluten free.
Great advice from Regalbirdy.
Would just mention that Spirit Vinegar, aka Acetic Acid (made from fermented grains, usually wheat) affects me quite badly. Despite being told that after distillation there should be no gluten solids
Be aware this ingredient is in most bottled sauces and salad dressings, this can also be a problem when eating out or with takeaways.
Also a problem are chips fried in the same oil as foods containing gluten.
BTW does anyone else have a problem with spirit vinegar/acetic acid. ??
Yes I do. I also have a problem with glucose syrup, whereas Celiacs are supposed to be fine with this. 1 marshmallow gives me horrific pain in my chest/upper digestion and causes a blockage. I cannot poo for about 3-4 days. It is awful. Spirit vinegar is the same result.
Hi Eric, have you been told to go gluten free or have you been referred for a biopsy? because if you've been referred for a biopsy you need to keep eating gluten until you've had the biopsy to get a proper diagnosis.
Now as for gluten free foods available from the supermarkets, they all have a list of their gluten free foods that they will send you, this will include foods that are available whether they are in the free from aisle or not. So I'd contact customer service of your local supermarkets.
And lastly my advice is to take it one day at a time and soon you will be looking at what you can eat rather than what you have to avoid and good luck.
I have been told to go gluten free , no mention of biopsy . possibly because I only have the rash symptoms so far.
How helpful thank you it's such a mine field and I although many supermarkets have the free from in one place which is handy I often wished I knew of other ranges
Are you aware that each person has their own diet peculiar to them as exampled by all the above? GF lists are a starting point but you will still have to test each food. Are you aware where supermarkets source there food from? Aldi use European recipes which contain no maize nor wheat, whereas English supermarket chains use wheat and maize.
Also Gf does not mean FREE, it means very low but still measurable. As I wrote, experiment.
Foods which caught me out. Cooking oil, coffee, vinegar, chocolate, caramel.
Caramel is burnt sugar, but where did the sugar come from?
Even decades later you still read labels to see whether ingredients have changed.
Coeliac UK membership might be a waste of money, IMHO. Create your own lists by joining your supermarkets home delivery group. This allows you to create and remember your own items on their website. Import this list into their app on your mobile or tablet. Most chains offer free wi-fi. So once you login on mobile or tablet your list appears.
Rather than find replacements for foods now excluded, use something different. Snack on a carrot. Best of luck.
Yes I would register with Coeliac UK. They have the best list of what is available.
There are lots of foods readily available, all fruit and vegetables are naturally gluten free. Any unbreaded cooked meats, meat, poultry, game these are also ok for you to buy. On thing you need to check though are ingredients of packaged foods as some foods contain hidden allergens that you may not know are there. Yoghurts that have no cereal in them are also fine, be careful of ice cream though, and tinned soup lots of these contain flour.
Most supermarkets have an aisle that is Free From. One word of caution though, have your had a bronchoscopy done yet, as it is important to eat gluten containing products until you have had this done.
Join the coeliac society and they send you a small comprehensive book that will fit in your bag or pocket.
